That doesn't surprise me - the way you've described him, he's basically the weakest character in his own world, and extremely unsuited to living in it.
Not that any of that is a be-all end-all for character writing, but it does make him very interesting.

Specifically I should clarify that I don't think it will actually fit into any of those categories - I think this new technology is actually going to implode the way that Meta did. And we'll all look back and laugh about the billions of dollars that got wasted on it for nothing.

That was around the same time too - funny enough I got to play a tiny demo of both games in an electronics store.
The control stick for DK64 was broken so I formed a very low opinion of it, because I was 12 and couldn't tell it wasn't the game's fault.
