Shirley Young, class of 1955, graduated from Wellesley with a degree in economics and began working at Grey Advertising, where she was one of the few women and Chinese Americans.

“I loved Wellesley,” Heesu “Ally” Kim ’21 told the Career Education department. Kim is pursuing a joint M.D.-Ph.D. at the Stanford University School of Medicine, the first Wellesley alum chosen for the university’s highly selective Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program.

A little bit of rain couldn't stop the Class of 2025 from participating in the classic tradition of hooprolling! On Saturday morning, seniors raced down Tupelo Lane with Arushi Ghosh ’25 named the winner! She was promptly picked up by classmates and dunked in chilly Lake Waban, as per tradition 🥶

Activist & academic Sophonisba Breckinridge, class of 1888, was the first woman to pass the Kentucky bar, but she found little work as a lawyer. Miserable, she visited a Wellesley classmate at the University of Chicago and met Marion Talbot, who persuaded her to pursue a Ph.D. in political science.

Halimatou Hima, class of 2010, grew up in Arlit, a small town in northern Niger. At 15, she became the first president of Niger’s youth parliament, where she learned about challenges girls faced in rural parts of the country.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas, class of 1912, is best known for her 1947 book, “The Everglades: River of Grass,” in which she argued that the Florida Everglades was not a swamp to be drained, but a complex ecology deserving protection.

Prof. Jennie Pyers’ PSYC101 class visited the Davis Museum to put what they learned in the classroom to the galleries. After learning about cognitive mechanisms of visual perception, students worked to identify strategies that artists use to create the illusion of three dimensionality in 2D images.

According to Harvard Observatory Director Harlow Shapley, Cannon’s official position was the William Cranch Bond Astronomer, but “her unofficial position was dean of women astronomers of the world and a leading and most honored woman scientist.”

At Wellesley, Ruth-Arlene Howe studied psychology, anthropology, and sociology, and then received a master’s degree in social work from Simmons College. She began teaching at Simmons College School of Social Work in 1970 and headed to Boston College Law School that same year.

Jane Bolin, class of 1928, was the first Black woman in the United States to become a judge. A pathbreaker and role model to many, she was also the first Black woman to graduate from Yale Law School, and to join the New York City Bar Association.

Nancy Gist ’69, Yvonne Smith Madlock ’70, Alvia Wardlaw ’69, Karen Williamson ’69, and Francille Rusan Wilson ’69 created Ethos, Wellesley’s first Black student organization, through their on-campus activism fighting racism. Ethos remains active today, connecting students and encouraging community.
