I think it's deeper. Plant-based proteins and milks have been cutting profits to the meat and dairy industry for decades. This is about propping up Big Meat + Big Dairy. Removing PBP from the recommended protein sources in the DGA will likely cause them to be excluded from food assistance programs.

The ripple effect is undeniable—farmers lose a reliable source of income + people who rely on food pantries have fewer fresh, nutritious options. The hypocrisy is glaring. Critics demand low-income families make “better” food choices, yet policies like this actively remove those very choices.

Many of the farms in my area who are caught up in this are too small to interest these corporations but I fear they/we will be collateral damage.

SNAP benefits are used to purchase products from farmers markets. Literal income for farmers.
