“So?” Wade demanded as soon as she removed the earbuds. He waved his hands in an exaggerated hurry up movement, staring at her with wide eyes. “Eh.” Laura shrugged a single shoulder, holding Wade’s gaze steadily, even as his eyes bugged out like a cartoon. “What? What? What in the fuckmost do you mean by eh?” “It’s okay.” Mostly just because she liked fucking with Wade. “Okay? Okay?” Wade echoed, his voice growing increasingly shrill with every syllable. “It’s okay? What—“ He clamped his jaw shut, pressing a closed fist to his lips. “You better be fucking with me, cashew, because if you’re not, I might have to unadopt you as my honorary niece-slash-goddaughter-slash-sole beneficiary and return you to the pound.” Mary Puppins’ head shot up and she whined. “No, not you, my perfect little post-midnight-feeding Gremlin!” Wade called. He jabbed his finger at Laura. “It’s this… this thing that’s going to the p-o-u-n-d.” Laura fought against the smile that was trying to take over her face as Wade wiggled his finger at her. Her nose scrunched up automatically when he booped it. “You look like your dad when you do that, b-t-dubs,” Wade added. Then he shook his head. “It’s okay. Jesus, Mary, and Bea Arthur. Kids these days!” He slapped his palms against the table. “Al-righty, cashew. Since I have been left in charge of you this evening, I guess I should feed you. Even if your taste in music is clearly appalling.” Laura hummed. “Are you in charge of me? Or am I in charge of you because Vanessa’s working?” Wade gaped at her. Then, “Those sneaky motherfuckers! Alright, just for that, you can have all the candy you want. Candy for dinner? No. Pizza for dinner!”
