No, they actually signed him, so even though he never ended up playing in their system, they also didn't get any compensation the next year for the lost pick. Just a complete waste of a top-10 pick.

In theory voters would then punish Republicans for this blatant departure from historical norms, but haven't we already seen that that isn't a real thing? (Voters don't actually care about any of that, they just want their side to win.)

This crop is never going to do that, plus the administration was already ignoring last year's legal appropriations anyway.

More likely would be that the Senate abolishes the filibuster and passes their budget with 0 Democratic votes. Is that any better or worse than this?

I'm with you, while I'm not a fan of the "centrists" caving on any issue, I've also never been clear on what a positive outcome here was supposed to look like.
Republicans in both house and senate give in and pass a compromise budget with meaningful concessions to Democrats? Maybe 30 years ago.
