Not to be too critical of the author, and you did mention concerns as well, but some red flags I see: 1, that they are not a tech-user generally, and now using this; 2, that they are getting such a strong emotional connection with it; 3, that it reinforces all their perceptions (good and bad).

Makes me want to read the book. The movie was great in many ways, but felt somewhat, vaguely flawed to me. You've probably put your finger on the issue.

Sorry! My guess is the iPad/iPhone has to be new enough? If it uses the AI/machine learning tech I think that's limited to relatively recent models. But I'm just shooting in the dark here.

This version has alt text, but if you wanted to know how it was done, the responses in the thread to the OP say that on the iPhone, when you have an image with text, the lower right hand icon wit three lines/menu icon has an option for OCR-ing the text, but I haven't tried it.

THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT. as @heidikitrosser.bsky.social has noted, the northwestern faculty had just voted overwhelmingly against exactly this kind of capitulation.
BTW, any story about a possible Northwestern capitulation should include this detail (screenshot is from the oped linked below)
