February AMA!
<p>Hi,</p><p>It's been a busy time here on <em>Webworm </em>lately. </p><p>Thanks for being here for it. I was inundated with comments under the <a href="https://www.webworm.co/melania/" rel="noreferrer"><em>MELANIA</em> review</a> that I sent out to paid members over the weekend...</p><figure class="kg-card kg-image-card"><img src="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-5.11.51---PM.png" class="kg-image" alt="Talk about taking one for the team, David" loading="lazy" width="1254" height="412" srcset="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w600/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-5.11.51---PM.png 600w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w1000/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-5.11.51---PM.png 1000w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-5.11.51---PM.png 1254w" /></figure><p> ... and had a blast <a href="https://www.webworm.co/melania/#ghost-comments-root" rel="noreferrer">reading them:</a></p><figure class="kg-card kg-image-card"><img src="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-5.56.13---PM.png" class="kg-image" alt="The whole thing is just making me think of that succinct Rebecca Shaw quote &quot;I knew one day I’d have to watch powerful men burn the world down – I just didn’t expect them to be such losers&quot; really the take of this era." loading="lazy" width="1282" height="262" srcset="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w600/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-5.56.13---PM.png 600w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w1000/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-5.56.13---PM.png 1000w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-5.56.13---PM.png 1282w" /></figure><hr /><h2 id="todays-ama">Today's AMA:</h2><p>I'm doing an AMA for paid <em>Webworm</em> members – so please, I'm here all day to answer your questions in the comments section:</p><div class="kg-card kg-button-card kg-align-center"><a href="#ghost-comments-root" class="kg-btn kg-btn-accent">Jump To Comments</a></div><p>You know the drill: Most things go. I followed it for about three blocks into our neighborhood, where it parked behind a couple SUV's idling on a side street full of houses.<br /><br />I sent a picture of the last vehicle on the end of the row to the St. Paul RR chat, and went to go get sushi – and didn't think about it again.</blockquote><figure class="kg-card kg-image-card"><img src="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-5.29.18---PM.png" class="kg-image" alt="Car's plates" loading="lazy" width="1750" height="1348" srcset="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w600/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-5.29.18---PM.png 600w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w1000/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-5.29.18---PM.png 1000w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w1600/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-5.29.18---PM.png 1600w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-5.29.18---PM.png 1750w" /></figure><blockquote>But... RR took it and confirmed it, got "commuters" here who scared them away, and they all zoomed off in different directions.<br /><br />Usually it takes me five minutes to go get sushi, this time it took me maybe 10 minutes. <br /><br />It's almost mundane now. I can't go anywhere without seeing them.<br /><br />But also just driving around not even on patrol I can still help patrol! It's also difficult to weigh in, because it's all so <em>vast</em>. Redactions make things difficult, including the fact some victims' details are not redacted, which is horrifying. There are nude women and children in there.</p><p>My brain is on fire, and it's hard to know where to start, so in an effort to retain some sanity, the best thing I can do right now is advise you to read is <em>Garbage Day</em>'s piece: "<a href="https://www.garbageday.email/p/here-s-how-epstein-broke-the-internet" rel="noreferrer"><strong>Here's how Epstein broke the internet: <em>His meeting with the founder of 4chan and his quest to profit off the end of democracy</em></strong></a><em>"</em>:</p><blockquote>"It is nearly impossible to not get pulled deeper down the rabbit hole while reading through Epstein’s emails. Because, whether or not he did directly influence elections across the globe, he was trying to. And he had the means and the access to believe he could. But even if we stick to what we know from previous investigations and what we can see in his newly-released emails, the reality, stated plainly, is, frankly, insane. But these are the facts:<br /><br />Epstein, possibly the most prolific sex trafficker in human history, spent the last decade of his life investing in technology that would help Russia, as he <a href="https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%2010/EFTA01972089.pdf?utm_campaign=here-s-how-epstein-broke-the-internet&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=www.garbageday.email">wrote</a> in a 2013 email, “leapfrog the global community by reinventing the financial system of the 21st century.” He was fascinated by websites like 4chan and technology like Bitcoin and was personally invested in the success of far-right politicians in the US and Europe. He believed he was months away from ushering in a new world order that would allow him to continue with his monstrous passion projects, like <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/aug/01/jeffrey-epstein-seed-human-race-report?utm_campaign=here-s-how-epstein-broke-the-internet&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=www.garbageday.email">creating</a> a super-race of children with his own DNA and <a href="https://www.ms.now/news/epstein-emailed-with-silicon-valley-elites-about-racist-eugenicist-ideas?utm_campaign=here-s-how-epstein-broke-the-internet&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=www.garbageday.email">building</a> fascist nation states to manage overpopulation and climate collapse. And he wined and dined the world’s most powerful men (none of whom seemed to have an issue with these ideas), inviting them to his island and his ranch, and made sure they were surrounded by an endless supply of young girls. And I’m just not sure what we’re supposed to do with that knowledge."</blockquote><p><em>"I’m just not sure what we’re supposed to do with that knowledge," </em>sums up how a lot of us are feeling right now, I think.</p><figure class="kg-card kg-image-card"><img src="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-6.33.50---PM.png" class="kg-image" alt="&quot; My 14 year old told me he read Epstein was responsible for micro transactions in CoD and I can't tell if he's serious or not&quot;" loading="lazy" width="2000" height="795" srcset="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w600/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-6.33.50---PM.png 600w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w1000/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-6.33.50---PM.png 1000w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w1600/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-6.33.50---PM.png 1600w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/2026/02/Screenshot-2026-02-02-at-6.33.50---PM.png 2248w" /></figure><p>See you in the AMA down below. The footage of Alex Pretti kicking an SUV is real.
Not AI. Very Real.
<p>Hi,</p><p>We're getting into a really weird place with AI generated video and images. When this all started, we had a situation where stuff that was<em> clearly bullshit</em> was fooling everyone's mum and dad. <em>"That's AI," </em>became a pretty common refrain – the subtext being, <em>"That's AI, you absolute idiot."</em></p><div class="kg-card kg-button-card kg-align-center"><a href="#ghost-comments-root" class="kg-btn kg-btn-accent">Jump To Comments</a></div><p>But over the last few days, cries of <em>"That's AI" </em>have been applied to a video that <em>isn't</em> AI. It was filmed on January 13, and it shows Alex Pretti (<a href="https://www.webworm.co/icekillsagain/" rel="noreferrer">the man executed by ICE this past Saturday</a>) spitting towards an ICE vehicle, before he kicks the SUV's tail light, causing it to fall off.</p><figure class="kg-card kg-image-card kg-width-full kg-card-hascaption"><img src="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/2026/01/Screenshot-2026-01-29-at-4.33.02---PM.png" class="kg-image" alt="" loading="lazy" width="2000" height="1229" srcset="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w600/2026/01/Screenshot-2026-01-29-at-4.33.02---PM.png 600w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w1000/2026/01/Screenshot-2026-01-29-at-4.33.02---PM.png 1000w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w1600/2026/01/Screenshot-2026-01-29-at-4.33.02---PM.png 1600w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w2400/2026/01/Screenshot-2026-01-29-at-4.33.02---PM.png 2400w" /><figcaption><i><em class="italic" style="white-space:pre-wrap">A still from the video of Alex Pretti, which you can watch </em></i><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRWR13BAIEs" rel="noreferrer"><i><em class="italic" style="white-space:pre-wrap">here</em></i></a><i><em class="italic" style="white-space:pre-wrap">. </em></i></figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRWR13BAIEs" rel="noreferrer">The video</a> quickly spread online – and the gut reaction from many who saw it appears to have been, <em>"They are clearly trying to discredit Alex, this must be fake, it must be AI."</em></p><p>Comments across the social media I hang out on sometimes – Bluesky and Threads – filled up with comments like this. Definitive; decided in black and white.</p><figure class="kg-card kg-image-card"><img src="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/2026/01/IMG_9560.jpg" class="kg-image" alt="I promise it's fake" loading="lazy" width="1179" height="443" srcset="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w600/2026/01/IMG_9560.jpg 600w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w1000/2026/01/IMG_9560.jpg 1000w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/2026/01/IMG_9560.jpg 1179w" /></figure><figure class="kg-card kg-image-card"><img src="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/2026/01/IMG_9561.jpg" class="kg-image" alt="It proves AI has reached a point where the average person can't tell" loading="lazy" width="1179" height="524" srcset="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w600/2026/01/IMG_9561.jpg 600w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w1000/2026/01/IMG_9561.jpg 1000w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/2026/01/IMG_9561.jpg 1179w" /></figure><p>I admit I had the same knee-jerk reaction. Thing is, the video is real. Alex did that. The BBC and CBS have both confirmed it, and Alex's own family – via their attorney – <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/new-videos-show-altercation-alex-pretti-federal-agents-week-death-rcna256428" rel="noreferrer">has also weighed in</a>. </p><p>Parker Molloy has a really good analysis of the timeline over on <a href="https://www.readtpa.com/p/thats-ai-it-isnt" rel="noreferrer"><em>The Present Age</em></a>, writing:</p><blockquote>They’re regular people on social media, scrolling through their feeds, seeing footage that complicates a story they’re emotionally invested in, and reaching for “that’s fake” as a reflex. The liar’s dividend used to be a strategy. Now it’s just how we process inconvenient information.</blockquote><hr /><p>The thing is, nothing about Alex's actions leading up to his murder <em>changes </em>anything. Kicking a tail light does not mean you should be executed 11 days later, shot 10 times in the back.</p><p>And if ICE agents realised the man filming them on Saturday was the <em>same</em> man who'd kicked their car 11 days earlier (this is all conjecture, we don't know) – then that makes what follows even more horrific. </p><p>Because that would make it <em>revenge</em>.</p><hr /><p>I guess my point is – with things so heightened IRL and online, we have to take our time when jumping to conclusions. AI isn't making any of this easy – but we can't forget that real life is <em>complex</em> and <em>messy</em>, and as new information comes to light we have to take our time before leaping to conclusions.</p><p>Because leaping to conclusions lands us in <em>Fox News</em> land, where things get very reductive and very stupid.</p><p>I've been having a few conversations with people who've been sliding into my DMs this week, essentially saying that Alex Pretti had it coming. Plenty of these are bots, but plenty of them are real people. Americans, living <em>somewhere in the middle</em>, mouthing off at me.</p><p>They essentially tell me that Alex had it coming because he was "inciting violence".</p><p>First things first – <em>"inciting violence"</em> isn't a normal line people say. It's been fed to them from the government, Fox, and social media – and now they're spitting it at me.</p><p>I wanted to share this conversation with Kimberly, who appeared to be a mother or grandmother proudly posing with two kids. A surreal insight to my last piece on ICE patrols.
"I'm Pissed Off That ICE Was There Again."
<p>Hi,</p><div class="kg-card kg-callout-card kg-callout-card-blue"><div class="kg-callout-text">Just quickly I wanted to thank anyone who chooses to support <i><em class="italic" style="white-space:pre-wrap">Webworm</em></i> financially, monthly or annually. You literally got me to Minneapolis to report from the ground. And thanks to you, all my reporting from the Twin Cities was free &amp; unpaywalled for <i><em class="italic" style="white-space:pre-wrap">everyone</em></i> to read at <a href="https://www.webworm.co/"><b><strong style="white-space:pre-wrap">webworm.co</strong></b></a> (which I believe is really important when it comes to public interest journalism). This piece is also free to share: <a href="https://www.webworm.co/pisseoff/" rel="noreferrer"><b><strong style="white-space:pre-wrap">webworm.co/pisseoff</strong></b></a></div></div><p>I am writing from LA, where I've returned for some <em>(very minor!)</em> surgery tomorrow. </p><div class="kg-card kg-button-card kg-align-center"><a href="#ghost-comments-root" class="kg-btn kg-btn-accent">Jump To Comments</a></div><p>But Minneapolis sits very heavily on my mind, to the point where I feel incredibly guilty for leaving. Reporting needs to be done <em>now</em> more than ever. Greg Bovino may have been dumped, but that's all performative. The assault on Minneapolis is far from over. ICE continues to inflict their specific type of horror, <a href="https://bsky.app/profile/atrupar.com/post/3mdgjohren22q" rel="noreferrer">as documented today</a> by the types of observers I <a href="https://www.webworm.co/database/" rel="noreferrer">embedded with a few days ago</a>.</p><figure class="kg-card kg-image-card kg-card-hascaption"><img src="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/2026/01/Screenshot-2026-01-27-at-3.42.01---PM.png" class="kg-image" alt="Kid holding icecream" loading="lazy" width="2000" height="1235" srcset="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w600/2026/01/Screenshot-2026-01-27-at-3.42.01---PM.png 600w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w1000/2026/01/Screenshot-2026-01-27-at-3.42.01---PM.png 1000w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w1600/2026/01/Screenshot-2026-01-27-at-3.42.01---PM.png 1600w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w2400/2026/01/Screenshot-2026-01-27-at-3.42.01---PM.png 2400w" /><figcaption><i><em class="italic" style="white-space:pre-wrap">ICE go after </em></i><a href="https://bsky.app/profile/atrupar.com/post/3mdgjohren22q" rel="noreferrer"><i><em class="italic" style="white-space:pre-wrap">a mother, her kid, and her kid's icecream</em></i></a><i><em class="italic" style="white-space:pre-wrap">.</em></i></figcaption></figure><p>Yes, the same monsters that unloaded 10 bullets into a restrained and unarmed Alex Pretti are still just that – <em>monsters</em> – going after kids eating their ice cream and telling the public,<em> "</em><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/MarchAgainstNazis/comments/1qonqzq/ice_agent_in_minneapolis_you_raise_your_voice_i/" rel="noreferrer"><em>You raise your voice, I erase your voice</em></a><em>." </em></p><p>Yes – they want to kill some more. </p><p>With all that in mind, you can understand the anger in the words spoken in this footage I took at 9.52am on Saturday (47 minutes after Alex was executed): </p><blockquote>"We're not going to fucking leave, this is our home motherfuckers. It was from a reader – "F" – replying to my piece about <a href="https://www.webworm.co/database/" rel="noreferrer">going out on an ICE patrol, and being filmed for ICE's database</a>.</p><p>That story focussed on a business that ICE goons had been harassing for the last week. </p><p>The email started nicely, but by the end my jaw was sort of on the floor. It reminded me how incredibly <em>small</em> the world is, and how we have to care for each other.</p><p>I've gotten the all clear to share it with you from "F", and it's also been cleared with the business. I've edited it down slightly for clarity, and removed information that is sensitive.</p><hr /><figure class="kg-card kg-image-card"><img src="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/2026/01/ice2.jpg" class="kg-image" alt="To: DAVID, From: F" loading="lazy" width="1552" height="406" srcset="https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w600/2026/01/ice2.jpg 600w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/size/w1000/2026/01/ice2.jpg 1000w, https://www.webworm.co/content/images/2026/01/ice2.jpg 1552w" /></figure><p>"I am a born and raised Minnesotan from St. Paul. My husband – also Minnesotan – and I have been temporarily living in Arizona, but will be headed back to Minneapolis in March. <br /><br />All that to say, my family and friends are still in the Twin Cities – and these past few weeks have been really tough seeing my hometown hit with so many tragedies and not knowing what to do, or feeling like I wasn't doing enough to help. </p><p>Which is why I was so grateful to see you arrive in Minneapolis. I knew that you had a large following, and not just from out of state, but from outside the country. I don't know that people outside of Minneapolis are truly understanding just how terrible it is there and knowing that a journalist with integrity was there to show people the truth, and to do it with kindness and compassion gave me a sense of hope that more people would begin to fully realize the scope of the situation. </p><p>Last night before bed, I clicked on <a href="https://www.webworm.co/database/" rel="noreferrer">your most recent <em>Webworm</em> article</a> and upon seeing the first photograph looked at my husband and said, <em>"Oh my God, I think David was at [BUSINESS NAME]."</em></p><p>I grew up about six blocks away in the home that my parents still live in. I know that neighborhood by heart. I'm old enough to have grown up in a time where we were sent out to play until the street lights came on. </p><p>My parents are retired, but my mom works part time at [BUSINESS NAME].</p><p>As I scrolled the article and saw the pictures I just knew, but my husband convinced me that, <em>"Lots of people live above their businesses"</em> and, <em>"He doesn't mention St. Paul, just Minneapolis"</em>. Which is a ridiculous reason from him, because he knows everyone from outside of Minneapolis calls every town in the Twin Cities <em>"Minneapolis". </em></p><p>No judgment, just fact!</p><p>Honestly, I think he just couldn't believe it. We spent two weeks in New Zealand this past October, and our drive to Hobbiton took us right by Bethlehem. It was too much to think that not only were we just in <a href="https://www.webworm.co/bethlehemcollege/" rel="noreferrer">David Farrier's childhood neighborhood,</a> <em>but now he was in ours?</em> </p><p>No way, too weird. <br /><br />Even though my gut told me otherwise, I agreed he was probably right, and went to bed. </p><p>This morning, I called my dad to check in – and he told me ICE had been at my mom's work again yesterday. I immediately started telling him my suspicion about your article, and the second I told him there's this journalist from New Zealand, he cuts in and says, <em>"Hmm, I wonder if that's the guy I spoke to yesterday?" </em><br /><br />That sealed it for me: I mean, what other Kiwi could my dad have stumbled upon yesterday? I sent him the article and he saw your picture and was like, <em>"Yea! That's him. Nice guy."</em> </p><p>I'm sorry to ramble, there's just so many emotions currently. </p><p>Above all I'm pissed off that ICE was there again. I knew about them being there last weekend, but I found out from your article that they've basically been stalking the shop. When I asked my mom why no one told me all week, she just explained that it wasn't on purpose. <em>They all are just so exhausted.</em> </p><p>And I get it. My mom goes to work, locks the door, and when a customer comes knocking she has to try and determine if they are actually a customer or undercover ICE. And if she makes the wrong call and lets the wrong person in, what will happen? </p><p>I know my dad and sister have been trying to help patrol and keep an eye on the outside of the building as you saw yesterday. At the end of the day they are all just so concerned for the owners of the business. </p><p>You may have already been told this, but it's worth reiterating that the owners of the shop are good and kind people. They are legal refugees, here as asylum seekers from Myanmar. In fact, the husband was a photojournalist who they wanted to persecute for truth telling. </p><p>Every day I wonder if this is going to be the day that I get a call with bad news about these amazing people. They came here with their small child after surviving the horrors of their own government, were able to make a new life, and are participating in the "American Dream" by owning a small business. </p><p>And now they find themselves facing another government who wants them gone.</p><p>Something about knowing that you, as a truth-seeking journalist yourself, were there helping to protect them from the American government of all things, helped ease a little of the anxiety I've been carrying around. </p><p>I am immensely grateful for all the people in Minneapolis who are doing whatever they can to help each other right now. I am especially grateful to the people who take big risks by <a href="https://www.webworm.co/database/" rel="noreferrer">patrolling</a>. It is only because of them that I am able to find any sleep at night. </p><p>Thank you for everything you did while in Minneapolis, and I'm sure will continue to do after you return home to speak up about the absolute insanity that is happening. </p><p>And way to survive one of the coldest spells in Minneapolis in years. I know first hand how bone chilling that cold is. There's a specific crunch the snow makes when the windchill is -20 or below. Those are the types of Americans – <em>and there are a lot of them</em> – that could topple fascism.</p><p>Witnessing that kind of behaviour also highlighted what utter scum ICE, and their ilk, are. Because there is <em>another</em> type of American who wants to maim and murder and kill on behalf of the government. I knew they existed, and I'd seen them before, but witnessing their <em>smarminess </em>up close – contrasted with the beauty of the people of the Twin Cities – really made it pop. </p><p>And that has left me feeling incredibly unsettled, angry and upset about what I witnessed. I feel that a lot of the US has no idea how bad this is, let alone the world. </p><p>When Greg Bovino <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/2026/01/greg-bovino-demoted-minneapolis-border-patrol/685770/" rel="noreferrer">got shunted</a>, I saw a bunch of people rejoicing like the fight was over, or that it was at least some kind of giant leap. It feels a bit like when everyone in my bubble was convinced Kamala Harris was going to win the 2024 election, when Donald Trump so clearly had it sealed.</p><p>The United States is a place <a href="https://www.webworm.co/americaisfascist/" rel="noreferrer">fueled</a> by <a href="https://www.webworm.co/givingthemhell/" rel="noreferrer">Christian Nationalism</a> – and I feel unless you grew up <em>adjacent</em> to that world, you don't know what a powerful, messed up cult that is. And you don't understand what is going on now. </p><p>The one thing I <em>can</em> do with my anger is use it to fuel more of my reporting here. I'm not exactly proud to say it, but anger drove all my reporting in Arise church, and it drives a lot of the stuff I do – from <em>Tickled</em> to <em>Mister Organ. </em>It drove my reporting in Minneapolis. If I was to soften that, I'd say perhaps a sense of <em>justice</em> motivates my reporting. But let's be real – I'm angry.</p><p><em>David.</em></p><div class="kg-card kg-callout-card kg-callout-card-blue"><div class="kg-callout-text">Thanks for reading and supporting <i><em class="italic" style="white-space:pre-wrap">Webworm</em></i>.
