One of my most favorite cozy reads (Hands of the Emperor, Victoria Goddard) does this masterfully – there's an entire giant catastrophe that pre-dates the events of the book and it's often referenced but never explained or detailed and she uses it SO WELL

I would love to see the range of responses this gets, it's like that time Elmo asked how everyone was doing

Also it's not even good??? I was like "well, I *am* trying to throw together a basic project tracker, that seems AI-able" but,,, no

Sure, but if I was city-livin' there's a good chance I'd need to wrestle it up stairs or into a weird back shed where removing weight would make it easier!

OH ALSO, the batteries are heavy and removing them makes wrangling the bike into rack/car/etc MUCH easier. So we end up removing them almost every time we ride. (We're very rural, often driving the bikes to trails elsewhere.)

We have two bikes and it's much easier to bring both batteries in, and charge them one-after-another, than to wrangle two chargers or swap the bikes' parking spot halfway through. (And it's so fussy to take out the battery, I also need the key to put it back in?? WHY)

we refer to this baptism as "mystery city water" and we have to ALWAYS assume it is innocuous AC water

the alternative is not worth contemplating

yeahhhhh I mean this is Jared Golden("all of Maine except the populated parts")'s exact strategy and it's worked GREAT for him

ALSO, and this tells you more about my psychology than I'd like to admit... I'd rather hang out in a place where I get to be righteous instead of having to be humble

The target side sucks ofc, but at least I get to keep my discernment and clear thinking, and can so obviously see the hurts/pains/costs to the non-targets.
July 14, 2025 at 5:28 PM
I don't know if this is a rhetorical question, because no one has answered it! But I think there are ways that being on the non-target side of oppression really disconnects you from your own humanity, AND everyone frames it as "privilege" which makes it hard to recognize what you've lost.

June 12, 2025 at 5:45 PM
given how quickly we all started singing Le Poisson Steve, I think distribution is a manageable obstacle

I am pretty sure this is related to how US culture in particular is terrible at looking backwards and repairing the past harm that has occurred in relationships, and instead just ghosts and cuts off and pretends to move forward with a blank slate
