Usually I'm with you that learning an entire language is something you do for practical reasons. toki pona is an exception for me because it took so much less investment to pick up, but it also got me into studying real languages and led to me minoring in Linguistics.

conlang learning communities tend to be focused on linguistics and the structure of language itself more than natural language learning communities, which usually focus on the culture surrounding their language. it's a different crowd.

Japanese phrases "One must/needs to/has to" with a negative conditional. "I have to sleep" is「寝なくてはいけません」(ne-naku-te=wa ik-e-mas-en) (sleep-NEG-CVB=TOP go-POT-FORMAL-NEG), "Not sleeping, (I) can't go on" or "(If I) don't sleep, (I) can't go on." Or some variation thereof.

re: wile, I once argued with a friend that a need is a want to avoid a consequence (I need to sleep -> If I don't sleep, I'll be too tired to function). They argued even that distinction's fuzzy, hence people abusing "I need" (I need the Switch 2 -> If I don't get it, I can't play the games).

"mi wile la nasin li pali" is expressing a want that a road (or way/method, if used more abstractly) will pali, or make/create something. if you're hoping it will revitalize an area or lead to economic or cultural growth by enabling travel there, the making of that change could be "nasin li pali".

but on the other hand, yeah, I sure hope it does. mi wile kin la.

road work should be "pali nasin" with pali first, since it's a type of work, not a type of road.

the second sentence is dubious anyway, since pali is work in the sense of "make, construct, accomplish something", not "function properly, serve a purpose".

the pun doesn't really work in toki pona.

I think the spike was due to jan Sonja joining Bluesky and the toki pona feed being created in rapid succession, with possible boosts from holiday break giving folks more time to spend on social media, and people creating new Bluesky accounts. Now the activity has leveled out at a sustainable rate.
