Bible aside, 2 books have possibly ruined my life: “The Ministry for the Future” because it inspired me to go to grad school a 2nd time & “Nuclear War: a scenario”. It pushed me over the edge on top of all this & now I’m finally getting therapy. Its also let me justify eating ice cream daily tho 👍

It’s almost Earth month. Can’t wait to get in fights with people on the internet about how de-extinction is actually not great, buying reusable straws helps nothing, and your recycling is maybe actually getting recycled depending on where you live.

A Sunday during US collapse: go to a queer birdhouse building workshop, buy discounted (still very $$$) fabric from Joann’s to sew my own burial shroud (for art), & end the day with a marketing signage crafting sess with your local Food Not Lawns group. & prob get a milkshake dinner & doom scroll

I’ve been self conscious about leaving a good gov job & moving backwards into environmental ed. But telling a group of 8 year old cub scouts the story of Martha the Passenger Pigeon & later seeing them solemnly gather together & solute a statue of her was pretty dang sweet. This job makes me happy.

So I’m embroidering my own burial shroud (everything’s fine, well…) and the other artists in the cohort I’m doing it for asked if I take commissions. Have I discovered an untapped market 🤔 And just as Joann’s is going under no less! Tragic

I want to thank the book “Something In The Woods Loves You” for giving me the peace, confidence, & permission to quit my job today. There were many reasons to leave, but being told it’s ok if one of those reasons is to spend more time in the woods is what I needed most.

I was going endure my toxic job to build a house this year but with tariffs and… everything, I think I’ll quit, spend the spring building a mud home, volunteering at a green burial cemetery & converting peoples lawns into veg gardens, & writing a nonfiction book about snakes. Oh I really will do it

Today I overcame my crippling imposter syndrome & finally taught my first climate futures workshop. Permaculture students learned how to incorporate climate projections & futures scenarios into designing more resilient agricultural systems. We touched on a lot & had amazing discussions! What a high!

I’m workshopping different coping methods for when things get too overwhelming or emotional & I need a 30 min break. I think I’ll try listening Chuck Tingle novels to distract & calm me. I fear I’ll get through his 400+ books in no time.

I work alongside an urban forester who came out of her office today on the brink of tears. Her program that provides trees to underserved communities is dead. She found out cuz her gov grant website was taken down. We took deep breaths together to try not to cry. I did it in the bathroom instead.

Thanks those of you who followed me interested in Transition Towns! I will hopefully have info about the possibility of a Summer workshop in a month or so.

I think this is one of my favourite colourful climate chart type things, because it depicts two things at once:

- Things are going to get worse, no matter what

- The degree to which they get worse depends on decisions made today

As a former environmental educator, I’ve found kids are a lot more open to eating bugs. Disgust is learned & we’ll need to 🦗squash🪳 that!
Grist on LinkedIn: Fiction to reality: Will the U.S. ever embrace insect cuisine?
Insect protein has been touted as the food of the future because bugs are nutrient-dense https://lnkd.in/gfkpP9Gy

Every barrel of oil, every cubic meter of gas, and every ton of coal burned brings us closer to environmental catastrophe

Has anyone else ever tried to build a house & have to fight for your life with the architect to design it to be more climate resilient? You can even have professional experience in green building & they not listen to you! I’ll not allow sexists to decide if I go into debt or die from a disaster

For Christmas I channeled my inner dad & I bought all the interns in our office emergency weather radios. They genuinely loved them, played with them at work, & sent videos using them. So glad they aren’t just humoring me & my doomsday prepping tendencies. Show a gen Z-er you care, get them a radio

If you & your friends don’t talk about starting nonprofits together, are you really friends? In other news, I’m experiencing crippling burn out from working a full-time job, a part-time job, & trying to start 4 nonprofits & a small business. I really want a dog but now doesn’t feel like a good time.

I sometimes call myself a futurist because it captures attention but I also roll my eyes hard when I do cuz most other futurists are cliches obsessed with AI. The future shouldnt just be about tech & upholding capitalism but about community & ecology. It doesnt matter how cool AI is if we’re extinct

Rain barrels are water conservation tools for areas like the Midwest that see 📈 flooding. But turning them into works of art, imagining them on every future home is very #solarpunk. Artists in the #Cincinnati area, submit your design & help the @cincinnatizoo.bsky.social + raise $ for enviro. ed. 🎨⛈️

Attending a conference today full of farmers who support conservation—whose work is made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act—yet most voted for someone who vowed to rescind that funding is wild. Without this $ farmers cant adapt to climate, threatening our food system & increasing farmer su1cid3

In my coauthor & I’s research on the youth response to an artwork called Future Library, knowing books have been written they’ll die before getting the chance to read caused what we coined “post death FOMO”. A panel said this about the response… (thanks for the shout out prof Jen)

2 years ago my twitter account was permanently suspended after I retweeted a joke about Fiona the hippo needing to go on birth control because she was having relations with her step father. I only hope animal reproduction humor won’t be suppressed on this app and that actual messed up stuff will be.
