I'm the administrator of weather-watch.com, a 22+ year old forum for amateur meteorologists and weather watchers.
Lessons learned:
a) Backup, backup, backup. I now have one on server, one on storage at the hosting company and one on my home NAS, each updated at least daily.
b) Lock out unused accounts.

Not sure how old it is, but aging capacitors, usually in the power supply, can often pop/explode when powered on after a long time.
