Tech worker and sometimes writer. Cryptography (not crypto), photonics and computing.
I made the dreadful mistake of watching Silicon Valley before a career in tech (in a startup no less) so I have retrospective moments of "ohhhhh, so that's.... they weren't being hyperbolic about that"

I saw this and said "wait *Textron*? The people who make Cessna and Beechcraft?" and yup, it's a real Yamaha situation where the parent company of Textron aviation also has a hand in making tanks

Iirc The Silver Sevens casino and resort in Vegas also used to be called Terribles - owned by the same guy, I believe

But who would be her second (kaishakunin) to deliver the killing blow (daki-kubi) at the moment of greatest agony (having to not be chancellor anymore)

It's not perfect minmaxing r.e price but full points for maximally disgusting, evocative enough that I can *feel* the queasy heartburn that comes after

It's like one of those accidents they have with pig slurry pits where someone gets knocked out by methane and someone else runs in to help them and also gets knocked out (repeat X times until someone calls an ambulance) except that in this case the pig slurry keeps making people horny for slop

Apollos are legitimately shit but they're also even more bargain basement - 300+ is more the domain of the Carrera lineup and while it's certainly possible to pick a dud from amongst them, they are on average considerably better. Point taken r.e hub gears though.

I'd dispute this - I bought a fairly basic rigid frame hybrid bike in that exact price range for use as a commuter and with regular maintenance it's absolutely fine. It's the stuff sold with features that don't fit the price range (e.g full suspension mtbs for £250) where things get dire.

I'm not entirely sure how helpful this is r.e your requirements, but so far I've been using PocketCasts (pocketcasts.com) and I haven't had an issue either finding a podcast directly on it, or linking a podcast RSS feed to it

Just develop a sense of proprioception that extends beyond your body. Merge with the machine and become one. I am only ~5% joking.

I think this is on the money - my hunch is that until now the only available source of open-ended conversation in clear language that can focus on a specific topic has been other humans, and so the presence of such a capability incorrectly suggests the presence of related capabilities such as reason
August 28, 2025 at 10:55 AM
That's entirely due to the OFGEM pricing formula, which more-or-less guarantees that as gas-produced electricity becomes less and less profitable to generate due to shrinking economies of scale, prices will continue to artificially skyrocket. In a sanely run market, it would make a difference

As a fellow bed-wall gap aficionado in my childhood, an additional benefit is that the wall is usually nice and cool

Language is the seat of reason, and until now the only reliable source of clear, rational and comprehensible language has been the human mind. I suspect we thus take the presence of clear language to imply the presence of reason and in doing so ascribe to GenAI capabilities that are beyond it
August 27, 2025 at 5:22 PM
I would also distinguish this from people deliberately misrepresenting the capabilities of GenAI - I think there are genuinely people who don't struggle with many forms of complexity who do struggle to reconcile the abstract experience of using AI against the under-the-hood reality
August 27, 2025 at 5:13 PM
I think part of the issue with GenAI in particular is that challenges don't seem to be cleaving neatly along any particular axis or metric of intelligence, and indeed it seems to be revealing blind spots in people who would otherwise be considered "functionally" intelligent in contemporary society

Intricate mosaic around the exterior wall of a brothel like the ones found in Pompeii but it's depicting aheago faces like that one cursed hoodie

God thank you for this, the sentence "I told my mother how much roast beef I'd eaten in the last two weeks and she started crying" cycles through my mind at least twice a day and I do not know anybody I can share that with without sounding crazy

Don't worry, I've taken it up with the editorial team. The new headline will be "Young gamers are hungry for fourskins"

This is a very reasonable point and usefully illustrative, but it is nonetheless also very funny to go to Greece and be perturbed by the prevalence of Greek food while whining that you can't get the food that will actively make your gut condition *worse*
