The memorial stone is sighted in Court Knowe, adjacent to The Linn Park. It is a rough hewn pink granite monolith. The stone is around four and a half feet high, the inscription in relief is the Scottish crown, the letters M,Y and A are superimposed, on each side is the letter R (with one reversed). This probably signifies Mary Regina. Below this is the date XIII MAY and at the bottom 1568. It sits on cobble stones forming square approximately 8 foot by 8 foot. The stone sits The sign near the memorial reads: This is no mean hill On Thursday 13th May 1568, just before 10 o'clock in the morning, Mary, Queen of Scots, stood on a hilltop South of Glasgow to watch the Battle of Langside. Where you are standing right now is believed to be that hilltop. Mary had escaped captivity from Lochleven Castle eleven days earlier. It was in Lochleven that she was forced to sign away her crown to her infant son James, which gave the regency (and ultimate power) to her half-brother, the Earl of Moray. But after almost a year in captivity, she fled to Hamitton, rallying 6,000 men to escort her to Dumbarton Castle, from where she planned to win back her crown and restore peace in Scotland. But it was not to be. As Mary's troops made their way through the narrow pass of Lang Loan (now Battlefield Road) they were ambushed by Regent Moray's 4,000-strong army. A battle ensued and within 45 minutes it was all over. Moray's smaller force suffered just one death and two troops injured. The Queen's army suffered far heavier losses: 100 dead and 300 taken prisoner. It is believed from here on Court Knowe, Mary watched what was happehing and she rode valiantly to be with her troops and encourage them. Only she found them in chaos and fighting amongst themselves. She fled the scene and rode south to Dundrennan in Dumfries & Galloway. From there, on Sunday 16th May, she crossed the Solway Firth on a fishing boat to England and further captivity. After 19 years' imprisonment Mary Stuart was tried and beheaded at Fotheringay Castle. This monument to the memory of Mary, Queen of Scots, commemorates her last desperate attempt in Scotland to secure a peaceful future for herself and her country. From here she saw that hope slip away. The original monument of 1799, carved in Giffnock freestone by Sir George Cathcart, was removed by Glasgow Corporation in 1927 and is now cared for by Glasgow Museums.

A view from inside The Linn public park that backs on to residential property, backed by a smart new wooden fence and back gate. Just down from the gate stands an abandoned jungle gym. It’s bare aluminium frame sourtounds a trampoline, and it’s attached slide. It’s is now being reclaimed by thorny bramble vines and shrivelling weeds. Dumped here now doubt by the owner of the smart new fence.
