In 2003, Candice Miller introduced a resolution that called on Washington to preserve and protect Lake St. Clair as a vital part of the Great Lakes System. If she had a vote today, Miller says she’d give the lake a promotion.

Regardless of its official classification, Lake St. Clair plays a big part in the Great Lakes system. It has thriving fishing, boating and shipping economies, it’s an essential hub for bird migration, and it provides drinking water for more than four million people in Southeast Michigan. (4/🧵)

The obvious answer to why Lake St. Clair isn’t considered a Great Lake is that it’s just too small. Each Great Lake dwarfs Lake St. Clair, which covers 430 square miles. Its surface area is less than a tenth the size of Lake Ontario, and it holds 99% less water than Lake Erie. (2/🧵)
