I feel like it can work with fonts that really make the ball tip of the f look like it’s the i’s dot, but yeah mostly doesn’t work. Especially when they really shove them close lol.

Anything is possible there. I do love seeing flags, so maybe if the translation’s locale includes a place also (which it usually does but some don’t specify), that flag could be used. I’m not sure if that’s a best practice. Otherwise, making/finding custom icons to represent languages could be cool!
