Finally quit procrastinating and got around to subscribing to Trench Art, the substack for @davidaxe.bsky.social . He's writes mostly about the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, but also posts interesting dives into niche military history. Check him out, especially if you live in Columbia!

The letter that the agency sent out (AFTER teams were pulled from their projects) mentioned "Trump-Vance Administration priorities" and "New operational parameters."

In the following 48 hours, numerous agency staff would be placed on admin leave, effective immediately, and forbidden from working.

As mentioned, hundreds of these members were weeks away from graduating. It would've been CHEAPER to simply let them graduate on schedule, not to mention the immense extra stress and legal liability the government faces from sponsor organizations who had their teams pulled with no notice or cause.

This rapid demobilization was done at the behest of DOGE, who first arrived at AmeriCorps HQ less than a week prior. It is clear that there was no interest in showing empathy or compassion for the dramatic nature of this order - and it wasn't done in the interest of "efficiency" either.

Up until this past Tuesday, 04/15, these teams were deployed across the US serving American communities. River 7 was in North Carolina repairing damage from Hurricane Helene. Ocean 8 was in Pasadena with FEMA's long term recovery from last year's CA wildfires.

Southern Region, with its campus in Vicksburg, had over 300 members across ~48 teams. These were young Americans who committed 10 months of their lives to a 24/7 volunteer service program. Some of them were in their first months. Others were weeks from graduating.

Big emotions today and yesterday in Vicksburg MS during the final demobilization of the AmeriCorps NCCC members. A lot of people don't know anything about this program. But the people here have done so much good for Americans, and would've done more if they hadn't been so cruelly forced home.
