I once packed a neck pillow with underwear to avoid issues. Warning with this is that it was a really good idea on the way out but the return journey was more fragrant. 😂😂

I've genuinely never had a problem I tend to hedge towards the safe side with baggage to avoid any possible problems. If you have any doubt pay for the overhead and you can still take under chair luggage. Split your kit between both and wear heavy/bulky stuff.
