I had a round of applause at the end of my tour of the Spanish Gallery in Bishop Auckland today so as a reward I get a golden key to unlock a lunch at Wetherspoons next door.

A new independent bookshop, Eiledon Books, opened in Bishop Auckland opened today. I was the third customer so I bought a book - it would have been rude not to. The owner was so excited about her new venture, and I look forward to many repeat visits.

It's quite satisfying to think that the next President of Ireland shares my surname. I'm sure my grandfather from Cork would agree.
