Today’s critter(s) are varmints. I’m guessing whitetail deer are mostly responsible. But could groundhogs, raccoons, possums etc be involved? Loblolly pine, pecan, red oak and black cherry are damaged. Anybody know who’s responsible?

Today’s critter is the neighbor’s Cow. When you graze in the weeds you might end up covered with cockleburs. Coincidentally we both served as vectors for weed seed dispersal.

Today’s critter is a Great Horned Owl sitting on a suffering sycamore limb behind the backyard. Wasn’t bothered by twigs tossed to Mia.

Today’s critter is a Carolina Wren on the patio. It’s the State Bird of South Carolina and was featured on the back of that state’s edition of the 50 States Quarters.

Today’s critters are Butterfly and Bumble Bee pollinators enjoying a weed that’s in the row of trees planted this spring. Sound off unless you like tractor noise.

Today’s critter is a Harnessed Tiger Moth. From Wikipedia “Despite their warning colors, they are preyed upon by bats, which rely on echolocation to hunt. The moths' vibrant colors serve as a visual deterrent, signaling to potential predators that they are distasteful.

I think I can figure out why the tractor overheated while bush hogging.

Robbie got the corn off Jones Bros Road today. Kinda dusty with <.4” since July 18. Yield monitor going 200+ with 16.5-18% moisture. Lucky to have it planted April 16. If you missed that window had tougher conditions.

Interesting clouds tonight.

Today’s critters are Song Sparrows. Spotted the nest/eggs a week or so ago but all I could tell about the parent was brown and small and I’m guessing Song Sparrow. Surprised nesting this late. Today Mom came back with a grasshopper so the kids have hatched. And I’m proud I guessed S Sparrow early

Today’s critter is a Grasshopper. It landed on my knee while mowing and allowed me to take the seat belt off, get the phone out of my pocket and take a pic. Stayed on for half a round.

Tried to identify the species but it was more work than I was willing to put in.

Today’s critter is a Ruby-throated Hummingbird. I was sitting on the front porch watching the soybeans grow and this guy flies to the flower garden, sees me and goes away. Comes back and hovers 2 ft away for 3-4 seconds. Decides I’m OK and proceeds to work over the Four O’clocks for over 5 minutes.

Today’s critters are at least 7 Black Swallowtail Butterflies enjoying thistle flowers right before the mower goes thru.
August 25, 2025 at 2:18 AM
Today’s critter is a Hackberry Emperor Butterfly. It landed on my arm but made it to the steering wheel where I could finally take a two handed pic in focus. Hackberry is its host plant and I’ve got plenty of them.

Today’s critter is a Whitetail Deer. While bush hogging in some tall weeds I noticed her giving me the stink eye. She let me take a bunch of pictures before running off. And about 20 yards later I flushed a fawn.

No longer surprising but Mia likes homegrown watermelon rinds too.
