The branches were filled with flocks of Mejiro (めじろ) - small sparrow-sized birds with beautiful shiny green plumage and a distinctive white ring surrounding their eyes, all feeding on the plum blossoms. (6)

Just up the hill from Jindai-ji is Jindai Botanical Gardens. Visiting here on the same day as the Daruma festival, the plum blossoms were in full bloom. (5)

Daruma dolls depict the Indian monk, Bodhidharma. They are seen as a symbol of perseverance & good luck. Bought with both eyes blank, one eye is painted by the priest, consecrating the owner's wishes for the coming year, who then returns with the doll a year later, when the other eye is painted. (4)

Jindai-ji is perhaps best known for its Daruma festival in March, when the temple is crowded with visitors who queue up to buy Daruma dolls (ranging in size from tiny to huge) and have them blessed by the temple priests. (3)

Jindai-ji is a very picturesque temple set in beautiful grounds. Many of the trees burst into flower in April. (2)

I've only ever seen them growing at the Botanics in Edinburgh. I'd love to try growing them myself one day, but I'm not sure Tokyo is the best location for them; although I have seen other Meconopsis types growing here.

Given its made by Tesco, this seems like the gentrification of a traditional English favourite, known as Fish fingers.
