Water Rocks! is an award-winning statewide youth water education program that fosters the interplay of knowledge, caring and engagement among Iowa’s youth that can lead to long-term multigenerational transformation of all Iowans.
Brown Snakes are common here in Iowa and are protected. It is illegal to kill or collect this species. If you have one hanging around your garden let them be. They are beneficial predators as they eat slugs, snails, and some insects!

Their natural habitat is more suited to WETLANDS, lakes, streams, river valleys, and open grasslands with a woodland border. They are typically active during the day, so be on the look out for one the next time you are out and about.

They are usually 4 inches long at birth.
Where can you find them? Well, anywhere really as they have easily adapted to humans and can be found in towns all over.

They are spread across most of the state, although they are not usually found in Northcentral or Northwestern Iowa.

A cool fact about Brown Snakes: they belong to the 30% of snake species that reproduce via live birth. No eggs needed! They can birth 3-20 living young at a time.
