75. The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman

My favorite cover of the month is from Beasts of Carnaval! Cover art is by Valentino Lasso. I love the vibrant use of color and how well it captures the feeling of being at the carnaval of the story. The central mask on the cover is for a vejigante

Best cover this go-around is an easy one: Gideon the Ninth! This cover I think does a good job of encompassing what to expect from this book (skeletons/necromancy, a cool cavalier, etc)

I've only ever read this book in the trilogy but I'm going to try and complete the other two by the year end

I was so happy to finish up the Between Earth & Sky series! Mirrored Heavens was a strong and exciting conclusion to that trilogy; can't decide if I like it or Black Sun more

Once again, Human Acts broke my heart

My favorite cover art was from Moonstorm, art by Priscilla Kim. Absolutely gorgeous 💖

Saw this cool dragonfly this morning! Hello small friend

I'm looking through the book covers of my July reads and realizing there's a strong artistic throughline: most (5/9) of them have just a face/bust, usually a woman's

This wasn't intentional, I swear!

Speaking of, one of the coolest of those was the cover for Womb City

35. The Seventh Veil of Salome by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
36. Where They Last Saw Her by Marcie R. Rendon

My favorite book cover of the bunch is from The Seventh Veil of Salome. I feel it captures well the sense of old Hollywood glamor that the book both embraces and provides critical commentary on

The escapades continue!

I eventually had to message my husband to ask where the little friend was

His answer: are you feeling like putting on makeup today?

Et voilà 😂

Weekends my husband sometimes moves around a labubu kind of like an elf on a shelf. This has been my favorite place he’s put it so far

May reading wrap-up! This was an audiobook / nonfiction heavy month for me

22. Don’t Cry for Me by Daniel Black
23. My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones
24. The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine by Rashid Khalidi
25. The World in a Grain by Vince Beiser

Had a fantastic time at #booknetfest this past Friday and Saturday! 🐙🐠📚 These were my swaps (and one purchase), none of which I’ve read before

Excited to get to them, but also nervous about adding to my physical TBR 😅

Obsession isn’t shy about its opinions on Americans 😂

(The game is from the perspective of high society British folks in the 19th century)

Soooo most of my foundational books are fantasy series. It's not all like that, but it's mostly like that 😂

Anyway, the feature today is the Abhorsen / Old Kingdom series! There are apparently more books now? These 3 are the only ones I know; Abhorsen felt like it closed things off pretty well

Next up in foundational books: His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman! Unlike many books from my childhood, I still own these 💖

These books and their creativity absolutely captivated me. I loved the daemons, the other worlds, the mysterious Dust, all of it. One of my most re-read series

Starting a miniseries of posts: foundational books when I was a pre-teen/teen. To remember where I came from and maybe some incentive to re-read a few of these! Fantasy was my jam when I was younger, so all of these are going to be some flavor of fantasy

First: the Redwall series by Brian Jacques

Yesterday was out for a walk and saw some barn swallows nesting under a bridge! This nest near the trail had five babies in it. They were absolutely silent when it was just them but when a parent arrived they chirped in chorus so loudly 🪺

I was in Shreveport earlier this week and the camellias at Norton Botanical Gardens were absolutely gorgeous ✨

Finished book 9 of 2025 yesterday, Good Dirt by Charmaine Wilkerson. Just in time for the book club tonight at Kindred Stories!

Trying to finish up at least one more book this year! (Calypso wasn’t impressed that I put it by her 😆)

What do you do when you have the day off?

Play board games at a coffee shop, naturally! ☕️

(from last Friday)

My next read: Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Cañas! I read The Hacienda a couple of years ago and enjoyed it and am looking forward to digging into this one 🌟
