Celebrating 10 years @aru-biology.bsky.social, now as Professor of Behavioural Biology! Endlessly grateful to the students and collaborators whose curiosity, mentorship, and teamwork made this journey so rewarding, whilst navigating and challenging academia's systemic hurdles #WomenInSTEM #ARUproud

Your regular reminder: If your feminism excludes trans people, it’s not about equity, it’s about power. Real feminism dismantles systems of oppression for everyone, not just for women considered 'deserving' of rights by the patriarchy.

The 🐝 have now moved on to their new home!
@fhillemann.bsky.social and I loved watching and learning from them — it’s been such a privilege to host a 🐝 swarm in our garden. We feel honoured they chose us, and even more commited to keep building a little #biodiversity hotspot 🌿🐜🐌🦔🦋🐞🪱(7/7)

We were advised to watch for ‘fanning’ behaviour — abdomen raised, wings moving fast — used for temperature regulation and circulating pheromones. We were delighted to spot regular fanning at the hive entrance and lots of buzzing activity in & out! 🐝 (6/7)

A local beekeeper from @bbka.org.uk came by that evening to collect the swarm. The key? Getting the 👑🐝 into the hive — if she goes in, the rest will usually follow. But whether they'd settle and accept it as their new home… only time would tell. 🐝⏳ (5/7)

Swarms usually move on to find a permanent home — like a tree cavity — but with suitable habitats for 🐝 and other pollinators increasingly scarce, we reached out to @bbka.org.uk to find a local swarm collector: www.bbka.org.uk/find-a-local...
(Tip from colleagues @aru-biology.bsky.social 👏) (4/7)

when a colony gets too crowded, a good number of 🐝 leave with the 👑🐝 (=queen) to find a new home (3/7)

After the initial panic (who’s really prepared for thousands of 🐝 suddenly buzzing in your garden — and are they moving in? 👀), we figured those are swarming 🐝, a natural part of how hives reproduce (2/7)

An amazing #nature moment in @fhillemann.bsky.social’s and my garden this week — a swarm of honeybees arrived and clustered in one of our trees! 🐝 🧵 (1/7)

New preprint in collaboration with @babeheim.bsky.social: Vocal mimicry in corvids. We describe vocal mimicry, i.e., copying of sounds produced by another species or the environment, in 31 out of 128 corvid species (24%). (1/2)

the fantastic @viveknityananda.bsky.social wrote a book and I can't wait to dive into it!

sadly it's not available in the UK (yet?) but I pulled some strings to get my hands on a copy -- thanks to @drhavichichger.bsky.social's mum for bringing it over from her travels

Our results show caching to be widespread in corvids and strategies vary depending on body size and latitude. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Different aspects of vocal communication are described in 35 out of 128 corvid species (27%). We suggest vocal communication in corvids as a promising area for advancing our understanding of the social and ecological drivers in the evolution of communication, but need more standardised research.
