Typical ruzzian playbook
Now typical American playbook
ie release some nonsense then let civilised folk scramble about finding proof or logic because they're looking at it through civilised eyes
Then update, twist, deny, counter etc until everyone gets confused and gives up
Do not get drawn in

WhatsApps reveal Gill sought to recruit other Brexit/Reform MEPs to make pro-Kremlin statements and that Gill’s handler took orders from Viktor Medvedchuk, a close Putin ally. It's a complex, detail-heavy story. So we went back to journalism's roots and made a pamphlet to hand out at the Old Bailey.

3/ We gave this timeline of evidence, the charges and context out outside court. No one had heard of Gill. Of course, it's hard for stories to cut through. But it's made harder when only 2 papers - Guardian & Mirror - mention the conviction/story on their front page & only one prints Gill's picture🙄

4/ As a fiercely independent news platform, we believe it's important that the public can access the detail of the case. And now we are publishing our timeline online. It details all of Gill's charges and related activity, including this one:

5/ We're also publishing a large portion of the evidence file, which includes WhatsApp messages with his handler/bribe funnel Oleh Voloshyn, clips from Gill's pro-Russian media statetments and from his police interviews. Here's one WhatsApp message- 'gifts' is a reference to cash

8/ In these messages Voloshyn asks Gill to arrange for three MEPs to make "comments on camera". He mentions ex-Ukip/Brexit party MEPs Jonathan Arnott and David Coburn. There's no suggestion Arnott & Coburn took bribes, knew about Voloshyn, or agreed to this particular proposal

9/ Arnott and Coburn did however travel to Ukraine with Gill on a media "fact-finding" trip and two months later made similar statements to the European parliament that Gill did in relation to this charge:

11/ Gill was close to Nigel Farage, a trusted colleague and a senior figure both in Ukip/Brexit party and Reform. The Met police says Farage was not interviewed and there's no suggestion he took bribes / is linked to Gill's case. They say investigations into other unspecified politicians are ongoing

12/ Link in final post but before that a quick plea. The Nerve is just 8 weeks old. We're a fierce, female-founded news org covering culture politics & tech. Public service research journalism is expensive & time-consuming. To date, this project alone has taken 100s of man hours

Sadly, America IS weak and corrupt. The Russians conquered 🇺🇸 nearly a decade ago - Ukrainians, thankfully for the future of democracy, are less corrupt and considerably less weak.
