At the very least, the "cross traffic does not stop" signs should be mandated in these instances.

In reality, I find that they are installed rather sporadically.

I am getting close to 80% compliance on the gates if I put my card flat on the reader and hold it for about 3 seconds.

Obviously that puts the gates well outside international standards and makes the purported 40 px/minute impossible, but it's what I have found to work.

I really wish that BART would acknowledge this is a problem that needs fixing.

Just watch any faregate at rush hour and you will see people attempting to tap their card/phone 3, 4 times before it actually goes through.

Whether or not it's a BART or Cubic problem, it is frustrating and broken.

This is a great example of the "curb cut effect," by which making the world more accessible for disabled people improves it for able bodied people.

If BART had put readers on both sides of the faregates, it would have been much easier for bicycle users, who walk their bikes on the right, to tap on.

Apparently the Great Redwood Trail, the planned 320-mile multiuse trail between Marin and Humboldt Bay in Arcata, has been taking some local blowback.

Their board meeting is running right now, and if you want to Zoom in and speak in support of the project, it would be appreciated!

I should note that this development was approved (if somewhat grudgingly) by the Planning Commission, and it will now head to the City Council.

I expect it will be approved there as well.

Props to the Chamber of Commerce for coming out in support of these developments.

They know what their businesses need - more customers, not traffic blasting through to the Ross Valley.

In Marin, Golden Gate Transit has advocated for the retention of stops accessed by free on/off-ramps, despite documented instances of people being killed accessing them.

This is because, in their words, bus operations would suffer if they had to go through a signalized intersection.

Particularly at night, this is a *very* difficult judgment to make on foot, particularly when you're looking to both your left and your right.

With half of drivers staring at their phones, and no street lighting at this intersection(!), you can see how the circumstances lead to fatal crashes.

Let's talk about why crossing these roads is so dangerous.

At a quick walk (5'/second), a pedestrian would be in the roadway for 13 seconds.

In those 13 seconds, a driver going 45 mph (the road is signed at 40) will travel 860', nearly three football fields.

While this is a legal (unmarked) crosswalk, to cross at the nearest signal would require walking a quarter mile, roughly 6 minutes (300 seconds of walking plus 45" waiting at the signal).

If the bus only comes every half hour, and you see it approaching, you may take the risk to cross the road.

This is an absolutely typical intersection for a pedestrian fatality, and where two people have been killed in a year.

-5 lane arterial
-No marked crosswalk or crossing signal
-No median refuge
-Long distances to signalized crosswalks (600' to E, 850't to W)
-Critically, bus stops on both sides
