I'm proud that this amendment passed unanimously and am very grateful to the neighbors of the Cook house and other community members who helped draft and advocate for this amendment which will help prevent this situation from happening in the future.

We've seen this issue with the Cook house where the property not being secured and weathertight has led to the further deterioration of the building.

We also took up the Heritage preservation regulations ordinance today. I offered an amendment that requires all historic buildings to be secured and weathertight.

The owner would need to come back to the City Council and gain approval to demolish the property at any point in the future. This is a good solution today that will allow us all to work to support the community effort to buy the property and restore it.

During the next 6 months the owner of the property will work to sell it to a buyer who intends to restore the house and in the meantime is still required to maintain the property. At the end of this period if the property is still not sold, it still does not mean that the building can be demolished.
