Johnson, often referred to as the "Last Surviving Dambuster," sadly passed away on December 7, 2022, at the age of 101.

The bravery, skill and sacrifice of the 133 Heroes that took part, of whom 53 tragically lost their lives must never be forgotten, nor their comradeship that they showed,

Other Lancasters were simultaneously attacking the Eder Dam, with another renowned airman, George "Johnny" Johnson, and his crew targeting the Sörpe Dam.

The second plane released its bomb too early, the bomb bouncing over the dam wall.

The third also achieved a direct hit, but the fourth's bomb sank.

By the time the fifth Lancaster approached the dam, all anti-aircraft fire had ceased, and the plane was able to execute a textbook strike,

The Allies aimed to flood the Ruhr Valley and disrupt the German war effort.

The 617 Squadron was led by the highly-decorated Wg Cdr Guy Gibson. Gibson was the first to attack the Möhne Dam. Gibson's approach was spot on, his bomb striking the dam with a deafening explosion.

targeting three key German dams: the Möhne, Eder, and Sorpe.

Using the modified Avro Lancaster and Barnes Wallis’s “Bouncing Bomb” codenamed Upkeep, this innovative weapon was designed to skip over torpedo nets and explode against the dam walls.

such as the replacement, maintenance and upkeep of the headstones that are in this cemetery, really caring for those that paid the price of war, be they civilians, nurses, factory workers, women’s land army, soldiers, sailors or R.A.F personnel.

There is a war graves plot of 87 burials from both wars, the rest of the graves are scattered throughout the cemetery.

We were joined by fantastic Commonwealth War Graves volunteer guides who were extremely knowledgeable and fascinating to listen to.

The Derby (Nottingham Road) Cemetery contains 194 First World War burials and 146 from the Second World War.

Having visited many War Graves ourselves, we have been curious about the Heroes stories and their courage, which in itself reflects in being moved by the scale of the sacrifices made. We visit to remember and give thanks to those that gave so much then, so we can be here today.

During War Graves Week, the Commonwealth War Graves Foundation is hosting a range of guided tours and talks near you. These events offer the opportunity to discover more about some of the 1.7 million men and women from the Commonwealth who lost their lives during both World War I and World War II.
