Folks who were around Portland in 2020 recall that there were a good number of protests in the area. Statues in several communities were being pulled down. Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Rider statue was pulled down and is now being stored and restored by Portland. Maybe we did not all know why Roosevelt was such a bad guy, but here is a bit of history about President Theodore Roosevelt and his policies and thoughts involving Native Americans.

I was looking through the NARA electronic records and found references to a man, Henry Petit, at Umatilla. The Petit name is well known at Grand Ronde. My Great GGG Grand Father Francis Mercier (Belgian) married Mary Petit (Chinook, Clackamas, Iroquois) and this brought the Mercier surname to the tribe. Peter Petit's father Amable Petit was a prominent fur trader in Oregon.

Nowadays, I get requests all the time for relevant tribal curriculum for public schools. This has been an issue for decades in Oregon. There was tribal curriculum units created in the 1950s and later by various school districts. I will try to dig up a copy of the Salem School District curriculum- it is actually not too bad, for the time period.

In the weeks before Election Day, it seemed like the candidate had two campaigns.

Too often these days our world, or community, is horribly divided and divisive. And not just by the actions of the present administration, but it seems everything and anything can be political and divisive. Is this the effect of social media, where people have write anything lie and divisive statement they want and they are taken seriously by half the population?

The year is 2025, we are now 195 from the malaria pandemic which hit the Oregon Territory, 161 years from Oregon Statehood, and 249 years from US Independence. In the intervening years the United  States and its citizens have led a series of campaigns to acquire all lands of the continent, and take them from Native nations who have been living here for more than 30,000 years.
