Probably not the most unique path but for him, one who lived his early life putting the greater good above himself as a life style rather than an instinctual choice it is a worthwhile change.

From there onward he fully falls into his chosen identity as an adventurer bound by nothing but his bonds and his own creed. Now he is a good guy at heart so he still does the good guy thing buuuut without that heroic touch. He will say if he’s helping for fun or a reward or just to enjoy fighting

Then StB rolls up and slaps that out of his hands and says fight another war. This is where that independent streak starts breaking out with Susano being the fight that sets him on the path to just being him. Now he is not one to be ordered but asked as a friend and begins voicing his own desires

From the banquet onwards things change. Caz is questioning his role as just a soldier as he is down another organization. He doesn’t even entertain the idea of being more than I hired sword for Ishgard but as events play out he begins accepting the role of WoL or at least his view of it.

Technically Cazhim’s direct assigned partner, Xavier Dalvik, gives him orders as the tactician but that’s more like trust in their positions building into true trust and an unbreakable bond. Plus neither would claim one is subordinate to the other even when they first met.

Alphinaud, and Alisaie to a lesser extent, did not have Caz’s full respect. He acknowledged the skill and knowledge he possessed but his attitude and behavior made it so it was less like obedience from Caz and more being nearby to say “I told ya so” when he crashed and burned before helping him up.

Minfilia was treated almost like a proper CO. Orders were followed to the letter and she had to suffer through a fair period of being called “ma’ am”. She was quick to get things to a more casual and friendly place and, by virtue of her character, came out of it with even more of Cazhim’s respect.

Fair. I’ve only ever dipped in a little as I tried to make an OC but immediately felt like I had a lot of reading to do if I wanted something to my tastes. In a good way. Maybe I can peek at this novel or at least have it on the shelf for later
