Why are my snips always so long? D:
She was staring at the equation the teacher – a slowly balding man in the age of her parents – made her write, wondering why every sponge was always so sticky and smelly. That was one of few reasons why she hated answering by the blackboard. She was forced to wipe it with a sponge that probably had been in use for the last five years and then write whatever they wanted her to with a piece of chalk smaller than her fingernail and leaving next to no trace on the wet surface in the colour of rotten leaves. Sometimes she thought that the mist of chalk filling every single classroom in the country wasn’t any less hazardous condition than the asbestos inhaled by construction workers.

It shouldn’t be so bad. First weeks would probably be the worst to get through, because she expected everyone else to know each other as well, but in team sports it was so much easier to fit in. There was surely some competition. There had to be, because after all they were a bunch of individuals who tried to make a name for themselves, but ultimately, they also worked towards a common goal. A team was a machine, and no machine could work properly if all cogs moved independently. It was just a matter of time before Melanie became one of them.

Oh, my stats for 2024. A couple more copies sold than in 2023 but almost no Kindle Unlimited. Pretty upsetting result to be honest because it's just pocket money. All I can do is hope that 2025 will be better... :(

Several pairs of eyes turned in her direction with more of indifference than curiosity – or maybe they just looked at the coach and barely registered Melanie’s presence. She wouldn’t be surprised. She had grown up for sure, but she still felt dwarfed by the almost six-foot-six man sporting pitch black circle beard. For some reason coach Sebastien reminded her of The Rock, just whiter, slightly less muscular and more hairy on the scalp. For all she knew, The Rock never played volleyball.

I hate screenshots, but it wouldn't fit otherwise :( No "snack" there, but apparently vibes are fine, so here's the vibe.
It wasn’t the most nourishing meal, but her stomach was tied into a knot. She wouldn’t swallow a single bite of a sandwich even if she wanted to. Hunger would get her eventually, and she would clear the fridge from cheese leftovers that she knew still were there, but she was hoping to delay it for as long as possible. She sat on the bed, crossed her legs and put one grape into her mouth. It tasted sour, just like her entire life now.

Ooooh, this is one of my favourite pieces so far! :D
She was lucky, but not everyone could say the same. Melanie had heard about the training abuse in China or sexual assaults in gymnastics teams. She had seen stories on Instagram and TikTok, had read posts and articles, had listened to podcasts. She had watched videos of balls, skate guards and gym bags being thrown at poor women who didn’t perform as well as it was expected of them. She had images of bruises, cuts and tear-stricken faces embedded in her mind whenever a new scandal saw the daylight. And she had a memory of a girl who once came to school in a cast because her tennis coach smashed the racket against her arm for sending a few balls over the fence.

Her dad was right. Gyms had zero interests in thirteen-year-olds. The threshold seemed to be set at fifteen, and the longer Melanie scrolled, the more she was bringing herself down. Maybe there was a good reason for that. Countless times she had read that it was out of care for young, undeveloped bodies, and that the gym was saving themselves the liability. There were classes for kids her age – aerobic, fitness lessons and some other activities that weren’t attached to lifting weights, but Melanie wanted just that – maybe not necessarily build muscle mass, definitely not at this point, but rather work on her strength. Pilates, as interesting as it sounded, wouldn’t get her anywhere closer the starting team.

The inauguration was as bland as ever. The principal kept talking about pride and new opportunities, and halfway through Melanie zoned out. She could never understand the purpose of such big speeches for something so trivial. At least it was warm. She’d hate it even more if she had to spend half an hour in cold wind or rain just to listen to how grateful she should be that she could get education. There was nothing to be particularly grateful for. She lived in the twenty-first century. She could just as well learn online if she had to.

A screenshot this time, because this is quite a lengthy paragraph...
Why did they have to live inside the concrete jungle when the views were so much better just a few cross streets away, Melanie couldn’t tell. She spotted a few blocks across the street. There surely had to be at least one flat for sale. The price probably didn’t differ that much. All those blocks looked almost the same from the outside – five or six storeys with rather small balconies and walls repainted maybe a few years earlier, because the colours were still lively. The only major change were the surroundings. Open space appealed to her much more than a few buildings almost touching wall to wall with just a small gap so the cars could get into the car park and a couple lines of cracked pavement to get to the store. A miniature playground surrounded by windows from all directions barely made her happy. If she wanted to get on the swing, she’d much rather do it without feeling that she’s being watched by every single neighbour.
