Seeing a few false “massacre” claims from misidentification of satellite images and Google Maps labels about #Sudan — some showing livestock or red vegetation misrepresented as blood or bodies. This misinformation undermines trust in real atrocity evidence and data sources

Interesting application of #remotesensing and machine-learning to track conflict-linked air pollution in #Gaza from Israel's destruction of buildings and farmlands. An relevant approach to be learned from for other conflict-settings

Israeli forces torching the Sheikh Ajlin Sewage Treatment Plant in #Gaza before retreating, depriving the civilian population of acess to clean-water and worsen the humanitarian situation for Palestinians trying to return. Over 70% of the water infra is damaged

The recent waves of Israeli airstrikes on targets in #Hudaydah in #Yemen caused more oil spills, affecting the local coastal environment. Multiple strikes this year caused significant air, water and soil pollution from hydrocarbons when oil facilities and ships were targeted

The second @UNEP report on the environmental impacts of Israel's war on #Gaza paints a bleak picture as " the damage to people in Gaza and the natural systems on which they depend continues to worsen." Full report and recommendations here:

Fields full of fiber-optic cables from #drones are visible along the battlelines in #Ukraine, as seen here in this video. The tens-of-thousands of drones live thousands of kilometers of these cables trapping wildlife and will pose a massive undertaking in post-conflict clean-up

Reports coming in from the frontline near Toretsk that Ukrainian troops suffered from exposure to ammonia gas after a decommissioned pipeline was hit by #Russia. @planet.com imagery shows a likely residual ammonia cloud at the location shared with us.

To reverse these impacts, we suggests the following solutions: strengthen local governance & institutional capacity, secure sustainable financing, boost waste collection & treatment infrastructure, use geospatial data + community engagement for evidence-based planning. 5/x

To understand the scale of these reverberating environmental impacts of the war, we used #remotesensing to map sites, with both manual checking very hight resolution imagery and machine-learning methods to identify in total over 470 sites in 2024, an increaes of 250 with 2014 4/x

This leads to exposure of civilians to toxic fumes, spread of (micro)plastics that pose additional healht risks, while increase of wastepicks, many of them children, further increase acute health problems and long-term exposure risks through other pathways 3/x

The disruption of public services such as garbage collection and processing due to the conflict leads to accumulation in streets, informal dumps and polluting practices such as a waste burning causing air pollution and methane plumes while leachate affects soil and water sources 2/x

The recovery of #Syria also requires addressing the pollution legacy of its broken oil industry in Deir ez Zor. Ongoing spills, makeshift refineries and flaring continue to affect the environment and public health. We spoke with @aljazeera.com on what's needed next
