Glenn Close, Ethan Hawke and Others Mourn Tom Stoppard www.nytimes.com/2025/11/30/t...

I was fortunate to attend an in-person discussion with this wonderful, humane genius at Philadelphia’s Wilma Theater on December 4, 1999. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to ask any questions.

This plaque is posted at West Point. Alcoholic TV talk show chatterbox Pete Hegseth wants to court-martial Arizona Senator Mark Kelly for repeating what is written on it.

Greed, racism, and violence to service both were slathered with exceptionalist propaganda to mask the ongoing self-dehumanization that continues to this day. Witness the election of Trump. First H. L. Mencken and recently Nancy Isenberg identified the result: rule by white trash for white trash

Just returned from the No Kings protest running from Philadelphia’s City Hall east in Market Street until reaching Independence Mall. We were packed like sardines at City Hall and it took me an hour to get from the west side to the east and on to Market Street. Then things loosened up a bit.

How the Kremlin kept Trump's businesses afloat whenever they teetered or failed. Everyone knows Trump hit a rough patch during the 2008 crash. Fewer know how Russians stepped in with cash to keep his projects going. This investigation maps out just how crucial those deals were for the Trump brand.
How Russian Money Helped Save Trump’s Business
After his financial disasters two decades ago, no U.S. bank would touch him. Then foreign money began flowing in.

When I see, hear or read vacuous pontifications by House Speaker Mike Johnson, two images spring to mind: (1) Mr. Peabody’s pet boy, Sherman (Rocky & Bullwinkle), but without his spark of intellect, and (2) the southern white trash H. L. Mencken saw in The Sahara of the Bozart, Trump’s MAGA base.

Five new studies to further refine my understanding of Colonial and U. S. History. Almost finished with The Great White Hoax (a series of hoaxes designed to reinforce white supremacy) and looking forward to reading Without Precedent and its exposure of evil Chief Justice John “Roger Taney” Roberts.

Johnny Rivers: Summer Rain

Released in November, the song looked back at two major cultural events, the Summer of Love and ubiquitous Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band music. It reached #14 on the charts in early’68. My favorite by Rivers.

Currently reading a biography of Octavia Butler, the great Black writer of science fiction, while enjoying her greatest work, the fascinating time travel novel, Kindred.

Inspired by Black businessmen who placed signs reading “soul” on their shop doors and were thus spared during the Detroit riots that year, Sam & Dave were backed by Booker T & the MGs, including Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn, and hit #2

By July, all the band members were actually playing their own instruments. The wicked social commentary, written by Garry Goffin and wife Carol King, gained my respect and also reached #3. The B-side was great: Words
