The weak yen has boosted #Japan 's #sextourism but at a cost. My article examines how the normalization of adult services and harmful stereotypes of Japanese women are driven by both societal attitudes and legal frameworks that permit commodification #hentai

From geisha to oshikatsu, toxic tropes fuel sex industry
It isn't only the foreign gaze that produces stereotypes of Japanese women as submissive and promiscuous. Local laws and cultural norms play just as important a role.

I am happy to share my article on Shiori Ito's #blackboxdiaries. I am fascinated by the phenomenon of how theaters in Japan react to critically acclaimed films that "break the rules". I see a similar pattern with Openheimer and Unbroken.

As Japan’s economy struggles under the weight of the weak yen, the depleted currency has in parallel attracted record numbers of overseas visitors, with Tokyo emerging as a globally recognized red-light destination — with some drawing comparisons to Thailand’s Pattaya, long associated with sex tourism. Through social media, influencers have inadvertently popularized the seediest parts of Tokyo’s nightlife, often reinforcing harmful stereotypes of Japanese women as submissive, sexually permissive and exotic.

An important article that addresses the intersection of orientalism, women, post WW2 law in Japan, weak yen and the sex business. More needs to be done to combat this.
