I’ve never read an unedited novel published by Knopf or Penguin Random House. I’m really confused and I have to say, quite shocked by your comment on Yvonne’s writing.

Hello Karen. Yvonne’s 2nd novel (not first!) was published by Knopf an imprint of Penguin Random House. Wondering if you could kindly elaborate on your comment,“it could benefit from editing,” - I find critiques on books that have been very well reviewed helpful when elaborated on.

Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor - The Dragonfly Sea

They say don't judge a book by its cover, but in this case I would. Reading this novel is like listening to the sound of the waves crashing, the silvery reflection of the moonlight on the water, the atmosphere buzzing with dragonflies. It's stunning.

I work in kidlit because I love being around kids and have a huge amount of respect for them. Growing up is tough, and they need adults who they know are in their corner. Kids can tell when adults aren't being authentic. So can agents, when an author isn't writing for kids because they want to.

One of the biggest turnoffs in queries is a writer insulting their potential audience. There's no reason to be derogatory to the kids you want to entice to read your work. It’s an automatic rejection from me. And honestly, if you really feel that way, maybe you should write for a different audience.

A quick correction. Dragon Fly Sea is not Yvonne’s first novel. Yvonne’s first novel is titled, ‘Dust’. You can google her if in any doubt.
