It's more common for b2b. They're definitely outdated and annoying to deal with (get lost, bounce, slow, etc.) but they're hanging in there especially in big companies that refuse to change.

I'm not in the US, and a fair amount of businesses here still pay by cheques. It's not an alternative to online banking, just a specific secure/timed way to move money.
