but those early games (SMB3, SMW +DKC 1+2) were able to tap into that simplicity that can only really be found at the emergence of a new genre.
yes there are new DKCs and new 2D mario games. in my opinion they get the gamefeel all wrong.
maybe with the exception of Wonder, that game got it right

i am blinded by nostalgia BUT i do think those two games have a magical design sensibility and game feel that hasn't quite been achieved since.
part of it is the purity of the game design. modern games can't get away with "just being a platformer" for fear of being seen as too simple
