The first week of learning a new language is always really challenging, but Frankfurt has made me feel very welcome so far!

Had *so* much fun seeing ABBA Voyage with @rozsro.bsky.social yesterday! The show is 10/10, no notes. If you have the opportunity to go, run, don't walk

Day 275: A beautiful day to walk along the River Orwell
October 2, 2025 at 3:07 PM
Day 270: Had so much fun today at the Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival, watching Thomasina Miers dazzle as always, hearing (and tasting samples!) from Suffolk's world-leading craft chocolate makers, and sampling some remarkable Suffolk wines. Suffolk's food culture is truly spectacular

Day 259: Autumn is here, which is a mixed bag for me, but one of the big positives is pumpkin soup
September 16, 2025 at 5:24 PM
Day 257: A lovely weekend with close friends in Cambridge, including an obligatory visit to Jack's Gelato to resist the unrelenting march of autumn. I type this as it pours with rain outside my window and I'm covered with a blanket for the first time since spring...

Day 252: It's a long journey, but a worthwhile one (with all credit to Alice Oseman for the wonderful image)

Day 250: One week back in Suffolk, and my mind is slowly but surely moving down the gears towards neutral
September 7, 2025 at 4:33 PM
Day 239: Yesterday, I finally paid a visit to Het Klaverblad. Established in 1769, it was an official supplier of goods from the VOC, and it is (to our knowledge) the oldest still-operating tea and coffee shop in the world today. This bag of "Leidse Liefde" is a goodbye gift for my office mates

Day 220: Happy International Cat Day! To celebrate, here's a hitherto unseen video of the adorable terrors I'll be seeing again soon enough in the UK...

Delighted to get my hands on a physical copy of @jakedyble.bsky.social's "Managing Maritime Risk in Early Modern Europe"! This is an indispensable read for historians of the early modern maritime economy – the nuts and bolts of maritime practices matter so much, as Jake demonstrates

Day 213: After giving four papers in four days, alongside running two sessions, I'm exhausted! But it was lovely to catch up with old friends, make some new ones, and have many great conversations. Here is a summary of my week in Lund in pastries!

#WEHC2025 Thanks to everyone who came along to "The Seams of Globalisation"! The conversation was wonderful, and we were delighted with the turnout

Day 203: I am LOVING this bookmark that one of my office mates made for me!!
July 22, 2025 at 3:53 PM
Day 199: On 15 April 2019, I looked through the north rose window of Notre-Dame. The blaze was so intense that there was no sense the window was still there – there was no doubt in my mind it had melted. Seeing the restored interior on Tuesday, including the intact window, was deeply, deeply moving

Day 192: It's peak cherry season here in the Netherlands, and I'm determined to make the most of it!
July 11, 2025 at 2:56 PM
Day 191: As I breathe once again, I can once again see the beauty around me. I'll miss it.
July 10, 2025 at 3:23 PM
Day 181: This is a really nice email to wake up to on a Monday morning 😭 (Senior scholars, please know that emails like this really do mean the world to junior scholars!)
June 30, 2025 at 8:41 AM
Day 180: A wonderful day watching the MotoGP race in Assen with a dear friend!
June 29, 2025 at 5:48 PM
Day 179: You'll find poems in various languages on buildings across Leiden. I hadn't noticed this one by e e cummings until today, but now that I have, it's one of my favourites
June 28, 2025 at 4:32 PM
Day 172: A brief trip back home is most welcome indeed
June 21, 2025 at 6:04 PM
Day 170: Alas, the punches keep coming, so I've erred in my goal of finding the positives each day. I'll start to put that right with this post: one consistent positive in recent times has been the wonderful weather here in Leiden, as well as the woods near me, which are a welcome source of respite.
June 19, 2025 at 6:39 PM
Day 160: A 25km walk to celebrate what will almost certainly be my final bank holiday here in the Netherlands. 4hr 15 mins is fairly good going – I'll certainly sleep well tonight!
June 9, 2025 at 6:08 PM
Day 159: A busy and social weekend, for which I'm very thankful! I experimented with a riff on a miso soup today, and it came out well, although the depth of umami can be improved next time.

I wrote a poem yesterday. It's the first I've written in about ten years, so I'll take it!
June 8, 2025 at 4:25 PM
Day 147: Back at my desk today in Leiden – this wonderful stack of new books for review in @journalmaritime.bsky.social will keep me busy!
