The VWF has three annual deadlines for general funding. The next are:

🎵 Monday, January 5, 2026 (for work taking place from April 2026 onwards)
🎵 Friday, May 1, 2026
🎵 Thursday, September 3, 2026

Each funding round is for projects to be delivered a minimum of three months after that deadline.

Symphony no.4 in F minor was first performed in April 1935 by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Boult. This letter was later dated by Boult as ‘Autumn 1944’; he did conduct the symphony again on 14 February 1945 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, in Bedford.

At the age of 41, Ralph Vaughan Williams volunteered as an ambulance driver in WWI.

He saw the horror of the war firsthand, and his experiences haunted the music he created subsequently.

This transcript was sent to Ursula Vaughan Williams in 1959 by Charles Parker who had produced the programme. In a covering letter, he said: "At first he was very reluctant to be recorded, although of course when he finally agreed to do so he was quite superb."

Not a full concerto - rather a gentle and nostalgic single movement, Vaughan Williams' Romance for Harmonica and Orchestra was composed in 1951.

In this short, folksy piece the harmonica plays a sweet, flowing melody over a lush string orchestra.

Vaughan Williams' Tuba Concerto is fun, quirky, and full of personality. It has surprisingly lyrical melodies, along with some playful moments, particularly in the third movement.
