Even I get this, to a lesser extent! Despite being and looking ethnically Indian, when I go to India, the locals easily clock me as an American, and I get treated very well.

I guess caveat is I was in grad school for 7 years, but that's not particularly abnormal for particle physics.

I didn't have a first author paper until Year 5 of grad school and landed a competitive postdoc fellowship, you're fine!
