Professional code wrangler. Retired race car driver. Late-blooming Olympic recurve archer. Unapologetic Canadian.
Happened to be in town while the Club de Tir-à-l'Arc de Montréal (CTAM) is having their garage sale so I went to check it out.

I'm envious of their indoor 70m range--a necessity given the climate, I suppose.

Archery comedy. 😂
Came so tantalizingly close to my goal of my first 300+/360 score at 70m today, only to be thwarted by not one but three wild fliers. 297/360 with three shots in the black. If any one of those had been better that would have sealed the deal. 😭
Next time!

Now that I've stopped habitually looking through my scope after each shot, I just tell myself "Focus on making a good shot and sooner or later I'll go down to the target and find all arrows in the gold." And today it happened (again).

Cold foggy morning at the #archery range today... Perfect weather for setting a new personal best! Shot a 282, 282, 280, 289, for a new personal record of 1133/1440. 💪

And here's what that particular end, which was not exceptional for how I was shooting today, looked like on the target. Progress!

Atmospheric river! A bit of a soggy and gusty session at the #archery range today.

Brought all my bows out and did a bit of A/B testing at the range yesterday. An embarrassment of riches: Win&Win TFT-G riser + Uukha SX+ limbs, Win&Win TFT-G riser + Win&Win MXT-10 limbs, Win&Win ATF-DX riser + Win&Win NS-G limbs. #olympicrecurve #archery

Between running the event and getting back into shooting shape after 2 weeks' vacation, today's Vegas round club shoot was just about having fun. After shooting all 6s and up in the first half, I switched to 3-spot target and immediately shot a 5 (miss) 😅. Still, I did manage one good end. #archery

Yep, X10s fly real good. The way these things fly dead-straight to the target when I make a good shot is soooo satisfying. I'm hoping most of the effect is mental, but either way, I shot my highest single-round 70m score in over two months today, 280/360. Onwards! #OlympicRecurve #archery

First end shot with X10s. Don't get too excited, this was 30m on an 80cm face, but so far, so good. Next, 50m, then 60 and 70. Since these are about 30gn heavier than my VAPs I'm working my way back small steps at a time to figure out the new sight marks. #OlympicRecurve #archery

Despite a string of disappointing tournament results this month, I've decided I'm finally ready to switch over to Easton X10s. #OlympicRecurve #archery

Go to an #archery tournament in Sacramento in August, they said. It'll be fun, they said.

I'm trying out a new finger tab in an effort to straighten out my draw hand. It looks a bit like a cyberpunk-styled medieval torture device. Feels a bit like one too. 😅

Finally took all my bowstring making supplies out of the big cardboard box they were haphazardly piled into and organized my small fortune's worth of serving thread and string material into some custom organizer trays I whipped up in TinkerCAD.

Been struggling for the past couple weeks when my scores suddenly plummeted for reasons unknown, but the goddess of #archery paid me a visit yesterday 🥰... only to depart just as suddenly 😭. Hopefully she left some blessings behind...

RIP brand new XS vanes 😅. (It's fine, I had a ton of these left over from back when I used them a couple years ago.)

Also: my Black Hole foam target only "sort of" stops these arrows. 😬 The bow is currently set to 55 pounds peak draw; arrows from my 45-pound recurve don't stick through.

Bad news: some kind of arrow clearance issue: 4 out of 6 shots, the bow bit a chunk off of the lower vane of the arrow. And I just fletched these too! 😂😭

Good news: shot some arrows with my "science project" bow (40-year-old Darton fingers compound + modern recurve accessories) for the first time tonight and I didn't die. Loading the arrow is a bit fiddly but the shot actually feels quite smooth.

That one arrow that hates you. 😅
Still, given that this was my first (70m; did a couple ends of bareshaft testing at 30 prior) end of the day, and in gusty wind, I'm not too sad about it. 😊

The first end I shot with my X10 arrows. At 18m; making sure the bareshafts were "in the same neighbourhood" before going back to 30m. #archery
