People credit Magic & Bird for making College Basketball a Thing but people like Carnasecca, John Chaney, Rollie Massimino, John Thompson, & Jerry Tarkanian are the ones who created multi-season storylines that gave people a frame of reference for when they sat down to watch a game.
Sad news: Legendary St. John’s coach Lou Carnesecca died today, Rick Pitino announced on Twitter. Carnesecca was 99 and one of the most important coaches in Big East history. College hoops became huge in the 1980s and so did his St. John’s teams, when the Big East ascended in the sport.

I wrote this when John Chaney died, about what it was like to cover him. He remains the most unique man I ever met. (His name will definitely appear throughout my Philly Hoops book.)
