What a celebration! Our No Boundaries program brought 150+ students to the Boundary Waters this summer. Honored incredible Buoy Award winners & gathered families for canoeing, portaging & s'mores. Here's to more boundary-breaking adventures ahead! 🛶✨

We have been posting about fires in the BWCA, including the 2011 Pagami Creek fire.

Did you know all Voyageur Maps include the outlines of forest fires? Great for observing the regenerating forest. Here is a snippet of Voyageur Map 8 w/ Pagami Creek extent in brown.

Here's another great Pagami Creek shot. This is from March 20, 2020. Pretty cool. You can see how the forest, even 9 years after the fire, looks so different in winter. The regenerating forest didn't yet have extensive conifer growth. Image from European Space Agency Sentinel program.

Labor Day! It is a final lake cabin weekend for many. Cabins are incredible, but at VM we're also grateful for wild sunsets on quiet lakes like Little Saganaga. Here's a shot we took earlier this summer.

This map shows how the Pagami Creek fire started to spread fourteen years ago on August 31, 2011. It had started about two weeks earlier with a lightning strike, but by September 13th it would cover some 92,000 acres.

Did you make it to the Minnesota State Fair and stop at the Friends of the Boundary Waters tent? It isn't too late to add a red dot to the huge Voyageur Map showing where you've camped.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) produced a beautiful Atlas of the Vermilion Iron Range District in 1903. Here is an overview of one of the maps showing bedrock geology, and a detail of the "Cacaquabic" Lake region (now now spelled as "Kekekabic").

At VM we head into the BWCA regularly to check map data. Howard Lake, off the NE corner of Gabimichigami is one of those lakes that gets VERY few visitors, but is a heritage trout lake. It took us about three hours, but we figured our way through! We'll update our online and printed maps soon.

Hoarding of BWCA permits has become a problem. This is BWCA permit availability for the first 10 days of August for a bunch of entry points. People fear they won't be able to get a permit late in the season, so they book multiple permits early in the season, but don't use them all.

It has been 18 years since the Cavity Lake fire, which burned 32,000 acres of forest. Here you see the regenerating forest of jack pine on Tarry Lake. Voyageur Maps show the outline of forest fires in dashed brown lines, along with fire name and date.

Serviceberry bushes, also known as juneberry, and saskatoon, are blooming in the BWCA. This photo is from the shores of Little Saganaga Lake. Sawbill Outfitters, which is a great place for outfitting, guides, and advice, has a good blog post on BWCA berries: sawbill.com/2023/08/11/b...
