I'm currently reading this book. The author mentioned this factoid on a podcast interview: in 1960 the Tokyo and NYC metro areas had roughly the same population (17M/14M). Today Tokyo has 37M (+118%) while NYC has 19M (+36%). He attributes this largely to differences in city design/planning.

95 m^2 is ~1000sqft. We're a family of 4 in a 1200sqft apt that was designed by a complete nitwit. So much unusable and awkwardly laid out space. I'm 25mins by foot/train to lower Manhattan. There's plenty of space to live at this scale within the 52 min healthy radius if we built+designed better.

Me noticing there's on-street parking lining both sides of every goddamn street on my walk to the train station. Literally every single street without exception. Some of them get a door-zone bike lane thrown in as a kind of insulting consolation.

Another day, another PATH dysfunction. #njisbroken @govmurphy.bsky.social

Curious how often these "signal problems" seem to happen just at the start of a peak window. Does PA get an alert overnight for these and then wait for the morning shift to respond? #njisbroken @govmurphy.bsky.social

Heads-up young adults! When you have kids you'll spend zero hours per week with your friends. And you'll have to pay someone to take your kid outside so you can have sex with your partner.

The mythical hard-working blue-collar New Yorker who *drives to work* makes an appearance again! We lived in UWS for 7 yrs and the thought never even occurred to us to get a car. Know what an easy affordability solution is? Sell your car and take the subway!

To anyone anguishing about the loss of parking spots this would result in, this is a you problem:

No big deal. We can use AI to write the reviews. Then we can dispense with the reviews and get AI to read new books for us and generate a summary and a personalized rating. Then we can dispense with human-authored books altogether and have AI continuously produce a "for you" content-slurry feed.

An easily digestible summary of the recent history of NYPD headcount and efficacy and more general empirical findings. For the lazy/reddit crowd, the final para serves as a TL;DR and also shows the author's bona fides:

Standard Monday morning PATH clusterf**k. This is how NJ's best and brightest get to work? @govmurphy.bsky.social this is on you. Let's do better @repsherrill.bsky.social .

Did you ever stop to consider that the owner of the truck needs it for work?

The owner:

This is what the official PATH app is showing today. It shows the schedule, glitches, and then shows nothing.

“The dream was to move up here, someday retire, and play golf every day,” Katie Whitney ... told Moneywise. “We’ve paid our bill. ... How did we get here? How in the world did we get here?”

This community was already a riff on the dril tweet in its conception phase.

@govmurphy.bsky.social 's constituents apparently don't ride PATH so we can go suck it. FWIW it looks like the WTC line switches to a 10m schedule after 1pm.
July 4, 2025 at 3:49 PM
Is PATH seriously running trains on a 20m schedule today?! Do they think people don't travel to NYC on a FEDERAL HOLIDAY? Swear to God these nitwits jump at every opportunity to reduce service. @govmurphy.bsky.social your vision for NJ sucks. Shouldn't you be governing some flyover state instead?

EWR: You can take our glorified parking lot shuttle/theme park monorail and connect with our famously reliably NJT trains (schedules not aligned) into NYC's technically condemned, unsafe for human habitation Penn Station!

I'd be comfortable betting $50 that Cynthia farted out this completely unsubstantiated thought from the driver's seat of her SUV while waiting for a red light to change.

"Everyone is driving tanks" isn't even exaggerating. This is the inevitable culmination of the vehicular arms race. I pay a premium to live in a neighborhood where I can walk my kids to school and take transit to work. Yet I'm still surrounded by other parents in these idiotboxes at school dropoff.

Holy moly. Duffy's lawyer got humiliated. Even if he didn't completely undermine his own claim here by taking the train, how much "federal money" could possibly be at stake due to fed employees driving into the city? This is the kind of attack a dimwitted teenager would mount.

Took kids to the city this Sun morn via PATH. 30m+ headways to WTC. Elevator not working at Grove; had to carry stroller down stairs. Cars were fully packed. Stroller barely fit and nothing to hold onto. @stevenfulop.bsky.social let's do better. @govmurphy.bsky.social does NJ WANT us to drive?
