Technology & invention was evident in the fashion of 1860s women. In addition to the sewing machine, which expanded many wardrobes thanks to the efficiency that the sewing machine could provide, synthetic dyes were becoming all the rage. The trend for vivid colors & patterns was established.

Hoops were relatively affordable, creating women’s skirts that took up ever more space on sidewalks, benches, and halls. In general, corsets were not tight-laced during this period; the sheer size of the skirts made waists appear small by comparison.

Eliminating the need for multiple heavy petticoats to achieve the fashionable wide skirts, cage crinolines allowed skirts to reach their largest circumference around 1860. By about 1862, the cage began to swing toward the back, becoming pyramid-shaped, the silhouette for the majority of the decade.

I hope you all have enjoyed this tour of some of the costumes of "Meet Me In St. Louis". Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to re-enact the streetcar scene...

🎶Clang, clang, clang went the trolley
Ding, ding, ding went the bell! 🎶

Not to be outdone by her daughters, Mrs. Smith steps out in this beautiful white confection with silvered embroidery & the most fantabulous matching hat & parasol!

Here is a closer look at the dress from a publicity photo of Judy Garland. It truly looks like a tiered wedding cake with meringue took the form of a dress - in the best way!

As the family has decided to stay in St. Louis, they are all able to attend the World's Fair the following Spring. The four Smith sisters do so wearing frothy white dresses with matching parasols for Esther & Rose.

His speech is interrupted by Rose's beau, bursting through the door to propose marriage to Rose - who looks stunning dressed in her blue dressing gown with multi-tiered sleeves, polka dot top & a lovely fabric rose at the waist. I certainly never look so fetching in my robe.

Witnessing Tootie's grief, the Smith family patriarch announced they are not moving to NYC & will be staying in St. Louis.

It looks to be a fine, sequined yarn that has been crocheted in a mesh stitch. (Not me currently looking online for sequined yarn to make a duplicate).

For the proposal scene & also for the iconic scene where she sings "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" to little sister Tootie (who then decapitates the snow family in her grief over having to move to NYC), Esther wears the most magical sparkling head scarf.

The dress was apparently so gorgeous, that it led John to propose marriage to Esther after the party.
(I mean, REALLY...can you blame him?)

Here are both the dress & the coat, that she wears later, in an exhibit last year at the Missouri State Museum. The coat has a red lining that matches the dress.

Esther makes her appearance wearing THE Dress - a breathtaking, pick your jaw off the ground, unbelievably gorgeous red velvet creation with perfectly puffed sleeves, sweetheart neckline (that was popular in 1944) & simple, elegant lines.
December 12, 2025 at 11:10 PM
Rose wear a lovely, off-shoulder bottle-green velvet dress with short puffed sleeves & elaborate embroidery around the neckline. The color sets off her pale skin & auburn hair to perfection.

As this is the last party the sisters will attend in St. Louis before their family all moves to New York, they want to leave a lasting impression & they certainly do!
December 12, 2025 at 11:01 PM
It's December & the sisters are invited to a Holiday Ball. This requires the wearing of corsets, which Esther is not thrilled about. The gorgeously embellished corsets & ruffled petticoats they wear in this scene are almost too pretty to cover up.

Fall has now become Winter. When I said that designer Sharaff paid attention to every detail of the costumes, even those of the background characters, that also included this well-dressed family of snow people.

Can we also take a moment to appreciate the chatelaine that the girls' mother, Mrs. Smith (played by Mary Astor) has on her belt? And her attire of her ruffled shirtwaist with bowtie & simple black skirt.
December 12, 2025 at 10:53 PM
At the beginning of the scene, Rose also appears wearing this beautiful rich, dark chocolate brown coat, which she will also wear in some of the upcoming Winter scenes.

Summer turns into Fall & for this Halloween scene, Esther & Rose are attired beautifully once more - Ester in a dusty blue blouse with a white collar & cuffs & white pom-pom detailing & a deep red skirt. Rose's multi-tiered & ruffled sleeve dress is mustard with a B&W striped tie & belt.

Esther arrives at the trolley wearing a stunning ensemble of a white lacy blouse with dreamy details, a black shortwaisted jacket & the prettiest blue plaid skirt w/ matching periwinkle gloves. After John arrives, Esther joins in the singing of the pivotal song in one of the most famous film scenes.
December 12, 2025 at 10:35 PM
Esther & John officially meet & make plans to take the trolley for a tour of the building site of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.
December 12, 2025 at 10:29 PM
For the soiree. Esther wears the most delightful Dusty Blue ensemble of what appears to be a dress with a ruffle-sleeve bolero jacket with a bright yellow jabot. The skirt has 3 tiers, w/ a one piece front panel. The edges are all finished with a trim hundred of matching blue tassels.
December 12, 2025 at 10:27 PM
The timeline of the film moves from Spring to Summer & the sisters are throwing a house party as a send off to college celebration for brother, but also as an excuse to socialize with their new neighbor, John.
