Article 19 passed, 141-27-20, again as a counted but not recorded vote.

We have a motion to dissolve Town Meeting - done in two nights! 🎉
November 20, 2025 at 3:18 AM
The vote on the motion to table was a counted, but not recorded, vote. This is this first substantive non-recorded vote I have taken as a TMM (serving since 2020) and is noteworthy because it was requested because so many of my colleagues expressed fears of retaliation.

Now we've begun WA 19 (presidential fitness resolution). The motion to table narrowly failed, 146-78-7 (requires 2/3 to pass).

WA 15, a resolution declaring Town Meeting’s support for recognizing the month of June as “LGBTQIA+ Pride Month” in Brookline, passed overwhelmingly and was accompanied by a moving personal speech by one of my Precinct 6 TMM colleagues. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 🏳️‍🌈

I voted no on WA 17 but it passed overwhelmingly.

WA 14, a resolution supporting posting the contact information of all town elected officials, including constables, clearly posted on the Town website, also passed overwhelmingly. (I abstained since this applies to me as a library trustee.)

I asked how much the independent arborist reviews will cost (this wasn't given in the combined reports). The answer is that it depends and can range from ~$300 to ~$1700 -- that seems like money that would be better spent on planting new trees, and I trust town staff will keep trees when possible
November 20, 2025 at 1:35 AM
#BrooklineTownMeeting is now discussing WA 17, a resolution asking town departments to adopt a policy on public tree removal that includes an independent arborist review, inch-by-inch replanting, & annual reporting. I love public trees but this seems like micromanaging our town staff.

We're not expecting any real controversy (though there have been lots of questions on WA 13) until we get to article 19, a resolution declaring the citizens of Brookline’s opinion that Donald Trump is unfit for office. There is a motion to table article 19 and we may take a non-recorded vote.
November 20, 2025 at 1:05 AM
Article 10 passed unanimously, and we're now discussing Article 13, a resolution that declares Town Meeting’s support for explicitly considering the needs of Brookline’s senior population as the town plans for future uses town-owned property on Fisher Hill (see brookline.news/town-propose...)
Town proposes recreation and community center at old Newbury College site - Brookline.News
The proposal for a multi-phased development is the first concrete and comprehensive plan put forward for the three-acre site since the town purchased it in 2021.

First up is Article 10, which will rename the baseball field in Warren Field for longtime BHS baseball coach Joseph Campagna.
November 20, 2025 at 12:24 AM
WA 9, which will create a new by-law requiring the Office of Housing Stability to publish a Renter’s Handbook that explains tenants’ legal rights, also passed overwhelmingly. And with that, #BrooklineTownMeeting is adjourned for the night.
November 19, 2025 at 3:30 AM
#BrooklineTownMeeting voted to refer WA 8 to a Moderator's Committee, 147-92-5. I voted to refer in part because many implications of the proposed bylaw were unclear or seemed like regulatory overreach -- but I support the goal of helping address overly bright lights that impact residents' wellbeing
November 19, 2025 at 3:02 AM
We're currently hearing debate on WA 8, which seeks to regulate outdoor lighting. There is a referral motion that I support because there are too many legal questions about the proposed regulations, but I support the overall goal of preventing nuisance lighting.
November 19, 2025 at 2:25 AM
Article 5 was withdrawn

WA 6 (update zoning by-law to comply with new changes in state law that allow family child care homes by right) and WA 7 (create a new Clark Road Overlay district in the zoning by-law to allow multifamily housing at 2 Clark Road) passed overwhelmingly
November 19, 2025 at 2:23 AM
Article 4 (updating the town by-laws to correct inconsistencies and make the bylaws accessible, which will allow posting them online in an accessible, up-to-date format) also passed overwhelmingly. An added bonus is that this article settles the "by-law" vs. "bylaw" question (it's "by-law").
November 19, 2025 at 12:54 AM
Article 3, a minor budget amendment to appropriate money from Uber/Lyft fees and some other minor changes, passed overwhelmingly, 238-0-4. (We have very few controversial articles this TM and it will take a little while to get to them.)
November 19, 2025 at 12:44 AM
Article 2, approval of the collective bargaining agreement with the Brookline Firefighters Union, passed overwhelmingly. #BrooklineTownMeeting
November 19, 2025 at 12:36 AM
There is also a motion on Article 19 to table the article (does not allow for debate and requires 2/3 vote to pass). The Moderator's announcement is noteworthy because we've had only recorded votes since I joined Town Meeting in 2020 (partly because of the shift to remote meetings).
November 19, 2025 at 12:31 AM
The Moderator just announced that we may have a non-recorded vote on Article 19 tomorrow (resolution on presidential fitness). This is interesting because there has been some discussion on the Town Meeting email list that TMMs who are fed. employees/contractors may fear retaliation from this vote.
