cognitive developmental psychologist based at Colorado State University. low span studying working memory 😉 she/her & my last name is pronounced low-eye-zah
Results: Expertise didn't moderate age-related slowing to establish bindings in WM, regardless of the relevance of the information (intact vs scrambled birds; Block 1). Instead, older experts showed a benefit to binding memory that disappeared when long-term memory was unreliable (high PI; Block 2).

How did we identify participants for these three groups? Subjective ratings clearly correlated with a perceptual discrimination task, which itself signaled a separate kmeans cluster of older experts. These experts were far superior at identifying birds vs the novices, validating the separate groups.

Why does information seem so much easier to process when it coheres with our prior knowledge? We investigated this question by recruiting three groups (younger novices, older novices, and older experts in birding) to take part in a working memory (WM) study, the critical parts pictured below.

How do we let @duolingoverde.bsky.social know that there is enough going on in the world right now, we don't need this creepy update to their artwork 🥴

On this day 14 years ago, my graduate advisor, David McCabe, unexpectedly passed away. I will always miss him and think about him, especially now that I am back at CSU as an assistant professor, just as he was, looking forward to my own grad students. I hope I am half as good of the advisor he was.

It was such a pleasure to host my good friend and colleague, @vlamarche.bsky.social at our research seminar at the University of Sheffield! We also got out to the beautiful Peak District for a hike to Thor's Cave, taking in the vibrant autumn foliage along the way! 🍂Thanks for visiting, Veronica! 😄

Happy Friday, friends! It's high time to share some big life news: Starting January 2025, I will be an assistant professor of cognitivite psychology at my PhD alma mater, Colorado State University.

Finally, with 61% of it greenspace, Sheffield is the 2nd greenest European city on the doorstep of the amazing Peak District, famous for its lovely landscapes & historic sites that offer unparalleled days out of cycling, hiking, & climbing/bouldering. Clearly I love the latter 2!

If you are into football (or "soccer" for my fellow Americans), you will know that Sheffield is home to the oldest football club in the world. I don't think that the schedule is out for next year yet, but maybe you can catch a Sheffield FC or Sheffield Wednesday FC match!

If shopping is your thing, Sheffield has it all. Besides typical high street shops, Sheffield is famous for its fantastic charity shops & markets, including the Moor Market, where one can buy essentials, treats or just lunch from all over the world. I often get my groceries here!

Sheffield is England's 6th biggest city, offering all the amenities of a typical city yet also a lot of local community vibes. The farewell reception will take us to Kelham Island Museum to interactively engage with the city's history; after, you can pop into the pub next door!

I've just finished my last lecture of my new prep on the computational modeling of cognition for our University of Sheffield cognitive neuroscience Masters students! Very chuffed with myself for roping in the all-time best British phrase while lecturing about choice response time models 😆

Ending the year as a proud PhD supervisor of both my students, Lily and @dtgm01.bsky.social successfully passed their vivas 🤩 thanks to their respective examiners, Paul Hanel, Alicia Forsberg and Moto Yamaguchi, @richjallen.bsky.social, and wishing them all the best for their bright futures ahead!

Using my 1st skeet to wish a good morning to all except to whoever wrote me a needlessly mean-spirited review (ofc, unsigned). Maybe meant to make me feel bad, but joke's on you that I am middle-aged and mid-career, so I am cold and dead inside. BOOYAH! Happy Friday from this fab view of Sheffield 😘
