I left Russia in a couple years, and consider the day I got out of there for good my second birthday. What I don't understand is why so many seemingly intelligent people are still in denial about this. (3/4)

They aren't rare, but usually live in dense vegetation and I've never seen them underwater before despite some trying. A few years ago it was realized that there are actually two rather distinctive species; in the photos are ruddy bowfins (Amia calva). Santa Fe River, Florida. (2/2)

But a 2019 study found them to be variable squirrels (C. finlaysonii) from Indochina, although it's possible that both species are present in Japan and even hybridize. It will take a while to figure this out. Jogasaki Coast, Honshu. (3/3)

All Japanese literature, iNaturalist, Mammal Diversity Database, and pretty much everybody else call them Pallas's squirrels (Callosciurus erythraeus), assuming that they are of Chinese origin. (2/3)
