Policy & Analysis at NYSERDA. Fighting for a just clean energy future. Ex- @climatesolutions.bsky.social and WA AFL-CIO. A reporter once called me a knifefighter.

Opinions my own.
So how much is this benefit worth? Using NYISO data, we can calculate that adding just 8 GW of renewable capacity, far short of deployment goals, reduces the cost of generating energy by $179 million in 2025, climbing to $3.7 billion by 2040.

DPS asked utilities to forecast bills through 2029. Using this data we can understand what's driving increases over the time period. What the data showed is that of the hikes utilities project through 2029, an average of 84% of them are attributed to something other than these programs.

Stakeholders concerned about the energy transition often raise the prospect of grid reliability as a reason to slow down. Here in New York it's quite common even to hear things like "the grid is on the verge of collapse".

This is just flat out not true. #energysky

New York is an expensive state to live in. Cost of living here is $1400 higher than the national average. Elsewhere I've shown that New Yorkers spend less on energy than their peers across the country--so where is our money going?

One word: HOUSING.

New York is famously pricey and is struggling with out-migration. Surely energy costs are one of the reasons that people leave?

Nope.

New Yorkers spend less on energy than the state's top out-migration destinations.

What does this mean?

How much does energy really drive costs across our economy? The answer might surprise you--honestly, it surprised me.

For New York's Draft Energy Plan, we used IMPLAN I/O tables to explore how much different sectors spend on energy. Here's what we learned--

Under the current policy environment, the primary source of benefits comes from transportation electrification, which is substantially transformed by 2040. Benefits from buildings come in a close second, indicating the substantial harm we see from use of oil and gas in our homes.

We've lived so long with the burdens of fossil fuel pollution that most people think we don't have a choice. But now we do.

As part of developing the New York State Energy Plan, our team completed an analysis of the health benefits of transitioning to clean energy. They're profound.

This must cost a fortune, right?

In short, no. We need to spend $120B/year on our energy system even if we don't transition. Our core planning case would bump this 2% in 2030 and less than 10% in 2040.

And in the process, New York will produce over 85,000 new clean energy jobs by 2040, which is already a top 3 growth sector in our state.
July 23, 2025 at 5:40 PM
There are tremendous health benefits associated with energy transition. Our core planning case (called Additional Action) will save almost 10,000 lives by 2040 and avoid 4,000 heart attacks and 12,500 ER visits for asthma, plus tens of thousands of sick days and other benefits.

Affordability is on everyone's mind right now. We analyzed what energy bills would look like in New York under different household configurations and found that bills will fall as a result of appliance + vehicle efficiency, and can fall further if we electrify efficiently.

In support of the New York State Energy Plan @nyserda.bsky.social published last week some analysis of the impact of renewable deployment headwinds, including federal obstruction, on meeting electricity needs in NY. #energysky.

Four takeaways:
July 1, 2025 at 5:02 PM
Our core planning case (called Additional Action) will slash state emissions by 68% by 2040 vs 1990 levels. This places New York among a select few global leaders in energy transition. As the tenth largest economy in the world, that matters--a lot.
June 26, 2025 at 5:21 PM
Let's start with the $$$. We found that across the great majority of New York households, energy efficiency + electrification will CUT energy spending.

Not every bill component will go down, but in total spending will decline. To secure these benefits, we must lower first costs of clean energy.

Over the last year, my team at @nyserda.bsky.social has been collaborating w/folks across State gov to develop a new Draft State Energy Plan. Yesterday we shared some of what we learned.

Two insights to share now--New York is leading the charge on decarb & the energy transition will be affordable.

New York, the third largest economy in the country and the 9th largest in the world, is projected to *at best* have flat population growth by 2050 and more likely decline precipitously.

It's past time we build housing.
