You can indeed and it’s a very nice place to stay in the guest house or farm cottages. The painting is a bit fanciful re landscape but the monument is accurate. Farm in the distance was my great grandparents’ last. They didn’t survive the sad loss of 2 sons at Passchendaele very long. 🥲

So sad to see empty Carnegie libraries around W Yorks. The Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in NYC has recreated Carnegie’s office in his former Fifth Ave mansion. Also has a lovely garden.

Not on the #wildflowerhour current theme but we enjoyed these late #harebells tucked into 12th century masonry at #RievaulxAbbey, North Yorkshire.

Missed #wildflowerhour this week but did find lots of Devil’s Bit Scabious at Staveley, North Yorkshire, including one with a visiting drone fly.

#HarebellChallenge
Harebells more scattered & less abundant this year (N Yorks on lime). Some unexpected companions: harebell w wild basil AND ripe brambles, harebell with last common spotted orchid, common centaury (centaurium erythraea) & last giant bellflowers (C. Latifolia).

It looks a lot more accessible in the early 20thc than it is now but the primroses were lovely this year!

The best thing is reading the inscription aloud in your best North Yorkshire accent & realising we still speak Anglo-Saxon: HIT WES AEL TOBROCAN & TOFALAN & HE HIT LET MACAN NEWAN FROM GRVNDE…
