You dont write (or like) things like this if you arent racist either:
November 18, 2025 at 10:32 AM
I mean 2008 was pretty dogshit, to be fair.
November 18, 2025 at 8:33 AM
I prefer to stick with old school basics
November 18, 2025 at 6:07 AM
Commander is a uniquely complicated can of BG 1/1 worm tokens
November 18, 2025 at 4:13 AM
Possibly, but i think an alternate hybrid mana timeline where we got 4H Boros Smothering
Tithe instead of both 3w Smotherthing Tithe *and* 1R Dockside in 2019 was probably a healthier commander meta in 2021

WoTC is knocking either way, I think
November 18, 2025 at 4:09 AM
I do get the reluctance to let WoTC play around with the idea mind you, thentrack record is... wobbly, but...

at the same time, I think printing 30 new eminence commanders would cause more damage than hybrid mana ever could, and they COULD do that at any time, and have chosen not to.
November 18, 2025 at 3:54 AM
And notably: arent the original colour identity rules.

im also not convinced that changing the hybrid mana rules are a solution, but id like to see it explored.

Im not sure how to do that mind you, but commander is a format created by players messing about, so id like to see that first
November 18, 2025 at 3:46 AM
Agreed, but I dont take it as given that the current rules are the best way to encourage people away from optimisation.

My personal experience leans the other way: that the focus on punishment in the ruleset rather than encouragement might push people the other way
November 18, 2025 at 3:37 AM
I want to play Ayara because I like ayara, and once that dam has broken how much fondness do I have for the 99? I can feel the pull to add white, and the hybrid mana change *would* lessen that

But thats a symptom of something else, and that other thing could be tackled with future hybrid design too
November 18, 2025 at 3:35 AM
Oh sure, and look i definitely want to put Afterlife Insurance into my Ayara deck, but thats not the *entirety* of the thing.

I mean I could swap to Elas Il Kor and basically not change that deck much at all.

But...would I?

Elas has acces to TefPro. And Farewell. And smothering tithe...
November 18, 2025 at 3:33 AM
I disagree with that premise, somewhat.

The fact that people WANT to play mono and dual colour commanders arent explained by the restrictions imposed by the rules: they COULD choose to play Jodah already.

The fact that they *arent* means that they're being driven by something else.
November 18, 2025 at 3:17 AM
To clarify, I didnt mean just the card: I think that the rules are pushing people away from running the *commanders* that would make those cards easy to support, which is the larger issue for me.
November 18, 2025 at 3:14 AM
Its not, theres a lot of factors, but its irresponsible to posit that a cards playability in the most popular format is a non-issue, surely?
November 18, 2025 at 3:09 AM
(That may be naive mind you, but if thats the train we are on I'd prefer to give the designers more tools to slow it down, rather than accept that we are going to run off the tracks)
November 18, 2025 at 3:06 AM
Oh I agree, but I also think that locking the designers out of hybrid mana is one of the reasons for that.

Or, at least, that it could be mitigated if they had access to hybrid mana, due to how it works with adding more pips i, but in a more flexible way
November 18, 2025 at 3:03 AM
(Im also not a huge fan of how that approach kinda forces you to design for commander in special products designed for commander, rather than integrating into the larger mtg biosphere)
November 18, 2025 at 2:39 AM
I like the theory but im not sure the reality matches up with that.

Generally I think you'd have to push those cards pretty far to make up for the fact that theyre so hard to cast, make up for the fact that you need to be mono coloured, or they'll just be ignored

Hybrid gives you knobs to twiddle
November 18, 2025 at 2:38 AM
I know for sure theres some wacky Boros Cards with lots of coloured pips, but in this case im considering future design space moreso than just what it presently available.
November 18, 2025 at 2:31 AM
Now you can argue that one could just increase the amount of coloured pips and make a thing monocolour, but the balance isnt 1 to 1.

( BBBB is much harder to put in a dimir deck than 4H, and its totally useless in most draft environments for example.)
November 18, 2025 at 2:30 AM
Because in a jund deck that card costs BBBB, but your mana base has to support green and red cards too

Easy if you're mono black, blue, or black/blue, but the most colours you add the harder it is for your lands to hit those specific pips (without enforcing that difficulty onto every format)
November 18, 2025 at 2:24 AM
A 4 hybrid dimir mana pip card certainly favours mono and dimir colours more than say, a jund deck.
November 18, 2025 at 2:17 AM
Also I feel its worth noting that Path isnt showing up in, say, every Canadian Highlander deck, (though maybe the 1v1 20 life format has a lot of impact there?)
November 18, 2025 at 1:53 AM
Or, you force people to run commanders with more colours.

My question is which is being forced more by the current approach, I think?
